If you read xand van tulleken’s new book you would never take it. It’s a life changing read.

It’s unbelievable in Wigan since the Makerfield by election. They are really garnering some support. I can see people I know following Rupert Lowe. And they are now all invested in the love story between the Restore Makerfield candidate and Marlon the mayoral candidate.

I do think that those who paid for the triple lock with late retirement (say 72 now) now lose that triple lock. And these will include WASPIs who had no maternity leave, no jobs held open for them and no childcare. I think the run off should be longer, tax wealth and sort cash in hand work.

I love that you kept it. When my uncle died we found he had bought and kept every newspaper from the day after John Lennon was murdered.

I understand it was needed in perpetuity but I feel like the first pensioners who lose it won’t get the established care service and these are the pensioners that didn’t have the employment rights, maternity leave, jobs held open. Should have taxed the super rich and pushed the date.

I have PMQ’s in my diary and people still put meetings in.

I also think that it’s strange that the optics show pensioners will pay for it but we will all clearly (and rightly) have a new NI for social care but that was not announced so the media/Reform will have a field day.

Will the first pensioners who lose it have access to this new social care plan though? I’m worried that there will be some who lose TL but miss out on the free care.

I do worry how it will go down in Makerfield. He may not even win his seat. I think he needs to be progressive on taxation to spread the load - optics do matter. It was a great speech.

I just don’t understand it. I can only think it’s her constituency that’s muzzling her. I live in it. I think she may lose it despite the Burnham bounce.

Reminds me of the time I tried to walk past some guys carrying a huge concert fence but I was trying to get past the fence and they kept walking. Hard to explain but should’ve let them walk past. Son couldn’t stop laughing.

Reduce the risk before you pass the bill by creating a fairer society.

My main concerns are linked to current financial pressures and overstretched palliative care. People with a terminal diagnosis needing to sell their house to fund social care could choose to die to preserve their struggling children’s inheritance. This would predominantly affect poorer people.

Makerfield. Keir lost so much support in Wigan when he called the rioters far right.

The greens were likely ‘new’greens - partly a reaction to Starmer trying to out-Reform Reform. Burnham needs to ensure he doesn’t fall into the same trap. Greens were never on those percentages around here prior to Starmer/Polanski.

Hi @vicderbyshire.bsky.social if Jason Arday and marathons ever come up, please see the evidence and references below. Better yet, invite @monkemma.bsky.social on and ask why she was able to find this information but most journalists have not

Firms these days are at pains to show they are independent. Can’t even go out for a lunch with audit team without approval from top partners.

xach @rachtoffees.bsky.social · 12/08/2026
Just interested how an audit firm without worldwide expertise would gain assurance that a company had the systems to ensure that its donations in various currencies and kind would be valued, categorised and taxed appropriately. Also whether they are rotating audit partner to maintain independence.

unusual for a ‘company’ so large to have such a small, independent auditor. When I was in audit a long time ago, the fees charged for one client could not be above a certain percentage of total fee income as this could be deemed to affect independence. I would also be interested in SAO testing.

Why don’t they use a well known auditor? How much of the audit firm’s income does Reform’s audit make up? If it is not a huge proportion, are Reform underpaying?

My kids laugh at me know as sometimes I ask what’s on normal tv- as in what is scheduled. Sometimes I like looking through what’s on/when it should be on.

When I was doing my Chartered Accountancy exams, the tutors said that those with History or Geography degrees generally performed best. I outperformed those with Accountancy degrees after three months. The benefits of a degree have been lost in the conversation around industry/apprenticeships.

It’s a guess but if we looked at other countries who locked down like NZ, we would probably find that the negative effects have not lingered as long or been as serious. It is not as simple as schools being closed inevitably leading to all of these things.

There is a pub that some relatives go to in Tameside that is a ‘Restore’ pub. In Wigan, where I live, Restore supporters lent their votes to Reform in Makerfield biding their time for a larger, more organised party.

I live in Wigan and didn’t get one leaflet or door knock. I know Bev and Geraldine visited the town centre but nobody goes there. Polling station empty with a churchgoer wondering round asking what election was on.

Lisa Nandy is my MP and I like her but I don’t feel she has showed any interest in the arts at all. I’ve written to her about the Music and Dance Scheme which they have failed to commit to for more than one year and we have not had a response.

This finally helped convince my husband that he can’t buy slip on shoes this Summer. I’ve been lobbying all weekend to achieve that.
