My birthday is this month, and I picked out a super nerdy super nice button maker. It’s so freaking fun.
Close-up of a round handmade button featuring translucent blue pressed flowers layered over a textured turquoise, black, and deep reddish-brown abstract background. A glossy clear surface creates a bright curved reflection near the upper-right edge.

Strike up conversations and soon learn absolutely everyone is suffering from a serious chronic illness or their best friend, or their daughter, or their mother/father and no one will guide them to their closest academic health center to get them the right treatment. I give them my contact info and this has become a new unpaid job. I do it to help, but it’s occurred to me that this shouldn’t be so random there’s a better way. The academic health centers need to be more accessible”

“In regards to the Cornell situation, a group sexual assault or gang rape is one thing, but if the group chat was advertising a woman to other men as ‘free p*ssy’ (essentially telling members that sexual access to her was available), that raises a different question for me: At what point do we consider that MORE than just assault, but an organized, coordinated sexual crime? Because it seems like it’s crossing the line into trafficking to me.”

Two dogs relaxing together on a sun-dappled green lawn. On the left, a young tan Belgian Malinois with a black face lies alertly in the grass, looking off to the side with its mouth open. On the right, a larger white German Shepherd lies calmly in a patch of sunlight, facing the camera with upright ears. Behind them is a lush, shaded garden filled with trees and dense greenery, with a hammock or outdoor chair partly visible among the plants.

Happy #HarvestMoon to all celebrating cooler weather with me! Caution: we are in what Alabamians call False Fall. Keep flip flops at the ready, neighbors.
A nearly full Harvest Moon glows bright gold through thin, streaked clouds in a deepening blue evening sky. Its warm halo illuminates the surrounding clouds in yellow, peach, and lavender tones, while trees and broad leaves form dark silhouettes across the lower half of the image. The Harvest Moon is the full moon occurring closest to the autumnal equinox; its name comes from the extra evening moonlight that historically helped farmers continue harvesting crops after sunset.

An open handmade watercolor card on a wooden surface. The right panel contains a vivid patchwork of angular scenes outlined in black: a golden hand holding a pentacle against blue and yellow panes; a pale full moon in a deep blue sky; rainbow umbrellas viewed from above; and a narrow strip of green foliage. Below, pink and orange branching lines cross a black band, above curling turquoise waves and a mosaic of rounded, jewel-colored stones. The left panel is blank except for an artist’s signature and the handwritten date “9/19/26” near the bottom.

What I’ve been working on today #Photography #Embroidery #Gesture
In-progress photo embroidery: a smiling woman in glasses and a cap leans toward the camera, one arm braced against a wall and the other on her hip. Loose pink stitches trace her upper body; vivid blue threads sweep down her legs and into the pavement, extending her gesture through the black-and-white street scene. A fragmented echo of her face appears above.

Duck Tail! (🎶ah-hoo-woo!🎶) #Painting Still painting background to foreground, so I started rendering over the block-in at his end.
An in-progress acrylic painting shows a male wood duck floating in calm, shallow water near the wooded shoreline of a quiet lake. The duck in the foreground is largely complete, with its iridescent blue-green head, bright red eye, bold white facial markings, and rich chestnut breast standing out against the darker water. Gentle ripples spread around its body. The landscape behind it is more developed than the foreground, with dense green trees catching warm light along the right shoreline and their reflections mirrored in the still water. The left side opens to distant blue water beneath a broad, clear sky. The lower right foreground remains intentionally unfinished, with transparent brown underpainting suggesting the lake bottom and awaiting additional detail.

Today in duck #painting 🦆
An in-progress acrylic painting on an easel shows a male wood duck swimming in calm, shallow water near a wooded shoreline. The background is largely complete, with warm sunlight filtering through dense green trees and reflecting across the water. The duck is blocked in with its distinctive markings but still lacks refined feather details. The water immediately behind and around the duck is being painted first so the bird can be finished cleanly over it, with subtle ripples already beginning to define its place in the scene.

Today in duck #painting
An in-progress acrylic painting on an easel shows a quiet river at first light, with dense green shoreline trees glowing in warm sunlight on the right and their reflections mirrored in calm, shallow brown water. The left side opens to distant blue water beneath a pale sky, while the foreground remains unfinished: a wood duck is loosely sketched in white and pale green lines, floating in the water where it will become the painting’s focal point. The contrast between the fully rendered landscape and the gestural duck drawing reveals the artist’s background-to-foreground painting process.

Today’s #painting progress. Almost ready for the wood duck to make an entrance.
An in-progress acrylic landscape painting of a calm lake at first light. Glassy water reflects a pale blue sky and a sunlit wall of dense green trees along the shoreline. Warm golden light catches the foliage and casts rich amber tones into the shallow water at the right, where a few pale rocks emerge from the bank. The distant shoreline fades into soft blue atmospheric perspective, while the foreground water and lower right corner remain loosely painted, emphasizing the work-in-progress state.

An in-progress acrylic landscape painting depicts a calm lake under a pale blue sky. Dense trees line the right shoreline, with warm sunlight illuminating bright green foliage and casting reflections across the water. The shallow water in the foreground is painted in warm brown tones, contrasting with the deeper blue water to the left. The composition leads the eye toward the distant shoreline on the horizon. The upper-right foliage and parts of the foreground remain loosely blocked in with visible brushstrokes, showing the painting is still in progress.

I’m in the studio today!
Alt text: A work-in-progress acrylic landscape sits on a large wooden easel in a home studio. The painting shows a calm lake reflecting a pale blue morning sky, with a densely wooded shoreline developing from the left toward the center. The left half is softly blended and more complete, while the right side remains unfinished, with loose, expressive green brushstrokes suggesting foliage and an unpainted warm-toned underpainting marking the future shoreline. An iPad on the shelf behind the easel displays the reference photo of the river scene. Brushes are organized in racks beneath a wall-mounted television, and a white rolling cart holding paint, brushes, paper towels, and tape sits beside a cushioned studio chair draped with a green apron. Natural light enters from a glass door at the right, illuminating the compact workspace.

It was #LifeDrawing day in Montgomery! This five minute sketch was my favorite of the day. Fair warning for the mod team, life drawings involve artistic #nudity.
A charcoal life drawing of a seated nude model viewed from a low angle. She leans back with one arm supporting her weight, her chin lifted and gaze directed upward, creating a quiet, introspective mood. Broad, blocky charcoal masses establish a dark background, allowing the illuminated figure to emerge through soft value transitions. Confident, searching contour lines remain visible around the body, particularly along the shoulders, hips, and legs, revealing the drawing process rather than concealing it. The face is developed with expressive eyes and subtle shadows, while the torso and limbs balance structural observation with gestural energy. An unfinished head sketch from an earlier pose remains faintly visible in the upper left, emphasizing the live drawing session. The composition combines loose charcoal handling with careful attention to light, anatomy, and the figure’s weight in space.

Keeping on stitching my gesture sketch! #photography #embroidery
A black-and-white photograph on textured canvas shows a person leaning casually against a post on a downtown sidewalk, one hand on their hip and one foot crossed in front of the other. Bright embroidery threads in blues, pinks, ochres, reds, and black trace selected gesture lines across the figure and continue beyond the body into the surrounding space, especially around the legs and feet, where loose stitched marks suggest movement flowing into the ground. Fine white sgraffito lines remain visible across the image as construction marks, while the unfinished embroidery emphasizes the contrast between the still photograph and the energy of the stitched gesture.

A close-up of a stitched mixed-media artwork in progress, focused on a person’s lower legs and feet as they step across a sunlit paved surface. The black-and-white photographic image is printed on textured canvas, while select contours are traced with hand embroidery in vivid blue, tan, and dark brown thread. The bright blue stitching follows the outer edge of one pant leg and loops across the calf, while tan thread highlights the shoe and ankle. Dark brown lines sketch the surrounding shadows and pavement cracks with loose, gestural marks. Many thread ends remain loose and untrimmed, emphasizing the work-in-progress nature of the piece. Faint printed paving stones and crisp cast shadows beneath the feet create a strong sense of light, while pale guide marks and stitching holes are still visible in areas yet to be embroidered.

A dense cluster of loose thread tails in black, cream, burgundy, golden tan, and bright blue hangs from the reverse side where multiple stitched lines intersect. A soft white cloth is visible beneath the stretcher frame.

Close up of my current art piece! #GestureDrawing meets #Photography meets #Embroidery I take the photos and do a very fast sketch on site, then print on canvas and place my sketch over and around the original image with colored thread, paying close attention to line weight.
A close-up photograph of a black-and-white embroidered artwork in progress. The composition focuses on the lower half of a person standing with one leg crossed casually in front of the other on a sunlit sidewalk. Loose, expressive embroidery stitches in deep burgundy, black, cobalt blue, and warm gold trace selected gesture lines over the photograph rather than outlining the figure completely. The stitched marks emphasize the rhythm of the legs, ankle, foot, and cast shadow, with sweeping, calligraphic lines extending into the pavement. Fine white sgraffito guide lines remain visible where future stitching is planned, revealing the artist’s drawing process. Strong sunlight creates bold shadows across the sidewalk, while the sparse embroidery transforms the photograph into a gestural drawing that emphasizes movement and attention rather than detailed representation.

Hunter Biden
@HunterBiden

When I heard about Senator Graham’s death last night, the first thing I thought about was not all the things he said and did in service of Donald Trump. I thought of the time before Donald Trump when he was a brother to Senator John McCain.

A time when senators from different parties could fight about politics and still be friends. A time when a conservative Republican from South Carolina could say of my father: “If you can’t admire Joe Biden as a person, you’ve got a problem. He’s the nicest person I’ve ever met in politics. As good a man as God ever created.”

That is the Senator Graham I will remember today. Not because I have forgotten what came after. Because in that memory there is hope. Hope for a country where brothers can fight like hell over policy and still share a meal, and a laugh, and the loss of the people they love.

I will choose to remember the time before Trump. Because I believe in an America after Trump.

Progress on my #watercolor Fiesta Roses.
A work-in-progress watercolor painting, still taped to a board with wide blue painter’s tape, shows a pink rose blooming from a trailing stem against weathered wood and soft green foliage. The composition is now in the midtone stage: the flower has gained richer pinks around the outer petals while the center remains warm peach and cream, preserving highlights for later detail. Leaves are blocked in with varied yellow-greens, blue-greens, and soft shadows that establish their forms without fully defining them. The textured wood beneath the stem has developed layered browns and grays that suggest grain while remaining loose and painterly. The background foliage has deepened into darker greens, pushing the flower forward. Many of the brightest highlights on the petals and leaves remain unpainted, indicating that darker shadows, edge refinement, and final details are still to come.

#Watercolor in progress today
A vertical watercolor painting, still in its early stages, depicts a blooming garden rose with two unopened buds. The paper is bordered by bright blue painter’s tape. The background has been developed with layered olive and deep green foliage, creating a dark backdrop that already establishes the composition’s values. Beneath the flowers, textured browns and grays suggest weathered wood or mulch.

The rose itself remains mostly white, preserving the paper for highlights. Transparent washes of pale cream, soft yellow, blush pink, and cool blue map out the petals without yet reaching their final intensity. The leaves are lightly blocked in with fresh yellow-greens and blue-greens, while pencil lines are still visible throughout the blossoms and foliage.

The finished painting will depict a rose that shifts from buttery yellow at its center to vivid coral-pink petals, with glowing orange-yellow buds beside it. At this stage, the artist has completed the background and established the lightest color notes, leaving the flowers luminous and ready for successive layers of richer color and deeper shadows.
