Orygen’s MOST program is helping fill gaps, with more than 14,000 young Victorians referred to the service since 2020. Our mental health system is stretched. If we can help young people access support earlier and stay supported for longer, that’s something worth investing in.

When someone makes a complaint to IBAC about Victoria Police, they might reasonably expect it to be independently investigated. For people in regional communities, or those already facing barriers to making a complaint, that can make an already difficult process even harder.

Rachel Payne MP @rachelpaynemp.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
When you make a complaint about police misconduct in Victoria, there’s a good chance police will end up investigating police. And only around 1% of police complaints to IBAC are independently investigated by IBAC. That’s not what Victorians should have to settle for.

As Dr Pascale Chifflet, a Monash University law academic and police accountability researcher, explains, too many forms of police misconduct, including excessive use of force and discriminatory practices, fall outside what IBAC can independently investigate.

When Victoria’s police complaints system fails, people can be left with little option but to take their case to court. We need an independent complaints system that people can actually have confidence in.

Jana Katerinskaja is a lawyer and survivor of family violence perpetrated by a Victoria Police member. As Jana puts it, IBAC needs to live up to the first letter in its name: independent.

People sometimes tell me they voted Legalise C*nnabis as a protest vote. And I get it. But once you’re elected, the protest part only gets you so far. You’ve got to show up, do the work and make the most of the opportunity people have given you. That’s what I’ve tried to do every day since.

August was a big month. We talked about letting Victorians have their say on c*nnabis legalisation, investing in proven responses to family violence, and what changes to group voting tickets could mean for Victoria’s democracy. Here’s a little of what made the headlines this month.

A little reminder that you don’t have to wait for an election to have your say. Contact your local MP. Send them an email, give their office a call, tell them what’s happening in your community and what matters to you. Your voice isn’t just important on election day.

Last week in Parliament, I shared Reuben Kaye’s story of courage in honour of Wear It Purple Day. For me, the day is an important reminder that we need to stand with LGBTIQA+ young people and make sure they feel safe, supported and free to be themselves.

This is about a proportionate response to minor c*nnabis possession. Treat people with dignity. Use common sense. Let police get on with the job. Make cautioning the law.

One Nation says they’re going to be tough on crime, but Victorians already have an opportunity to look at what that means in practice. Actions will always speak louder than words.

Rachel Payne MP @rachelpaynemp.bsky.social · 28/08/2026
Police time is valuable. We shouldn’t be tying officers up processing people for small amounts of c*nnabis when there’s more important work to be done in our communities. A caution, and everyone moves on. Common sense policing means more time for what matters. Make cautioning the law.

A small amount of c*nnabis shouldn’t leave someone carrying consequences long after the joint is gone. A caution teaches the lesson. A criminal record doesn’t. Make cautioning the law.

The debate made one thing pretty clear: our major parties aren’t just scared of c*nnabis reform. They’re scared of giving Victorians a voice on it. The laws need to change. We’ll keep pushing until they do.

We asked a pretty simple question: should Victorians get a say on c*nnabis legalisation? And we’re disappointed that our major party counterparts still won’t trust Victorians enough to put the question to them. Swipe to see where everyone stood.

People keep asking what we can actually do about family violence. Well, we know one thing that works. Perhaps we should spend a little more time talking about something scarier than potholes.
000
Rachel Payne MP @rachelpaynemp.bsky.social · 14/08/2026
A joint shouldn’t mean hours of police time and paperwork. For minor c*nnabis possession, there’s a simpler, fairer response: issue a caution and let police get back to work that matters. It’s common sense. Make cautioning the law.
