Eh I think it’s a pretty accurate mirror for how much of society thinks about violence and SA against women

I have advocated in the past for announcers addressing the off-field gendered violence committed by athletes during games. But I am coming around to the belief that this is a bad idea. These men cannot handle the assignment and aren’t qualified. They could learn, yes, but they won’t.

If you want to talk to somebody about it, you should absolutely chase that feeling, and talk to other dudes. But the women in your lives already know this is fucked up. I promise you. We know. Don’t make us nod politely while you process this out at your big age. We’ve got enough to worry about.

I don’t care who you are, I promise, the women in your life don’t need to hear “wow rape culture is awful” from you. I am very comfortable making this a blanket statement. You can either show up for them via your *actions* or you can keep on doing what you’ve been doing, which is nothing at all.

The Cornell story is horrific, but I’d like to shine a light on what happened at LSU with a current football player on the team:
In July, the school found Shanklin responsible for "forcible rape" and issued a one-year suspension, which is a full ban from campus and activities, according to documents reviewed by ESPN. After Shanklin appealed, an administrative law judge who handles appeals per LSU policy upheld the finding that the athlete was responsible for "forcible rape," but reduced the punishment to four semesters of probation with no restrictions, which allows Shanklin to remain enrolled and on campus and to participate in activities as long as he stays out of trouble.

I understand the focus on Jane Doe’s statement and what wasn’t included in it when it went to the DA, but shouldn’t the DA have, like, talked to her or the men or her friends, anyone? Looked into literally anything? I’m glad he’s been replaced, my word.

on the one hand, it's a lot to be working in sex abuse PI and being a rape survivor on the other hand, it is nice that during case review my boss and I can go on a tangent where every other sentiment is "men fucking suck" and "let's burn it all the fuck down"

We live in a society that punishes people who are assaulted. We question them, we shame them, we disbelieve them. Many survivors instinctively do that societal work for us. Survivors question themselves, they shame themselves, they don't believe their own version of events. We've trained them!

my phone rings anywhere from five to twenty times a day with people who have a potential case against someone who committed some kind of act of sexual or gendered violence against them. the number of people impacted is unknowingly large.

But we have to be careful when this convo centers one case. The reason they want to dox this woman or focus on how many times her story changes (if it even does) or worry over the ruined lives of the men involved is because you can pick apart a single case. Everyone will find it in what they want.

Gendered violence is a systemic cultural and societal problem. And when one of these cases boils to the top, you can see that in how many survivors come forward to explain how similar their experiences are, in ways both big and small.

men understand that women are ready to burn it all down, but they won't help because they're worried they'll be burnt at the stake. it's really too bad my dumb woman brain has a hard time differentiating between men who are harmful and men who are allies.
a skeet that reads "I mean, yeah. A bunch of us are there with you but we keep getting lumped in with rapists. I'm not going to light the fire if you're going to throw me on the stake.

The rampant misandry in online discourse is a big reason Andrew Tate has a huge following of morons and Trump won two elections."

something no one can prepare you for in divorce is that your friends get to choose if they still want to be friends with you. some people seek out new friends and start fresh, some people try to win them back, and some people use People Magazine as a replacement for friendships.

so what they’re going to find is that there isn’t a good protocol for investigating sexual assaults on college campuses. colleges don’t have any of the power that police have and can’t really compel evidence or testimony.

Jane Doe was doxxed because after being failed by her college and the criminal system she pursued a civil remedy and in doing so the perpetrators of sexual violence starting facing consequences and men not involved got mad and took away the safety of anonymity
