He is really mad, but I swear its not at me. Well, maybe a little. This wild male Vancouver Island marmot was a tad upset with one (just one) of the new marmots we released to his colony. The 2 girls were okay, but the new male needed to know who the boss was.
A Vancouver Island marmot appears to be charging the camera, but really he is just picking his way though the rocks. It is a challenging environment to walk around in. He did, however, finish this careful journey by chasing one of the new releases for a bit.

The colony did badly need the new releases though, as we could only find 4 marmots at the site - one adult male, one yearling and 2 pups. It is a big site and hopefully the two males can figure out that there is plenty of space for both of them.
The adult marmot and likely his yearling rest near each on a large rock.

“Draw me like one of your French marmots” @rmblscience.bsky.social Us marmots have to stick together. Bluebell says she's willing to volunteer for your OnlyMarms. She's not a Yellow-bellied marmot, but she is very keen to pose for the camera!
Bluebell, a Vancouver Island marmot with luscious chocolate brown fur, a delightful white nose, and paws that would be the envy of any Yellow-bellied marmot, gives the camera a side view. Bluebell, still a Vancouver Island marmot with luscious chocolate brown fur and white nose, poses for a frontal view with just a hint of white chest fur.Bluebell in her younger years doing her best Vanna White impression with a nest box. It's not her nest box. Correction: it wasn't her nest box. It is now.

Happy Mother's day to all our Vancouver Island marmot moms. Their strength, resiliency, and adaptability is incredible and makes the recovery of their species possible.

The "feeder" is actually playground equipment. Don't know how we missed that!

Okay, this is cute. Two pups of one of world's most endangered mammals, the Vancouver Island marmot, tussle. The species, which once numbered fewer than 30 is recovering, but it is still magical to see wild-born pups thriving! Video Adam Taylor

Yesterday Kevin Gourlay and Shayn McAskin saw the first wild Vancouver Island marmots of the season! The marmots in this video (also from yesterday) are Onlso and his untagged mate of several years, engaging in some early season pair bonding behaviour!
