Pretty sure I’m right about: - RFC 3339 dates - ISO 216 paper sizes - Fahrenheit weather temperatures - Dot-grid paper - End-to-end encryption - Software engineering being about collaboration costs Less confident about the rest. linktr.ee/rvcx

Again: Koko didn’t know sign language. It was a hoax, and the scientific community largely just looked away because it was good PR.

It took a few minutes (for me, at least) to parse the category-theory formulation. “Yes; I believe that’s an implication of my work. Is it significant?” “I don’t know. It seems significant. Maybe it’s trivial. It’s hard to tell with category theory. We can move on.” JFC, dude.

The thesis defense thing was amusing, because he took one of my theorems, recast it in category theory, and then said “this seems like quite a powerful assertion! You really think that’s true??” and I was terrified.

I have had multiple run-ins with category theorists. Including, notably, an examiner at my thesis defense. On every single occasion it took lengthy discussion to arrive at the conclusion that category theory served only to complicate and confuse concepts that were trivial within a specific domain.

Also: if Dems take the Senate (🤞) there is now ZERO chance Trump could get a SCOTUS nominee seated. That system was already in danger, but it’s now completely dead.

Rob Shearer @r.v.cx · 18h
It can’t be stressed enough that two years ago a drastic reorganization of SCOTUS was a nutso fantasy. It’s now a consensus Dem priority for 2029. Roberts did that.

But (closer to my own field) claiming humans are good at logic is like saying they’re good at arithmetic. Computers absolutely demolished any standard of “good” that left humans in the picture. Arithmetic and logic are utterly unnatural to humans; what’s impressive is that we can do them at all.
010
Rob Shearer @r.v.cx · 20h
This is such a pervasive theme of cognitive science it’s hard to pick one. The Wason selection task is the famous example of humans failing at trivial logic. More discursively, political arguments about juries consistently highlight that following trains of logic is a specialized skill.

Rob Shearer @r.v.cx · 20h
My sound-bite model of “consciousness” is that we have a cognitive organ that tries to model others’ psychology to predict what they’ll do. Self-narrative is just this organ confabulating explanations for our own behavior.

(They’ve reached the point at which whether LLM-based agents can “reason” is at the very least arguable. But this has pretty much no philosophical implications, because GOFAI outpaced humans at logical deduction 50+ years ago.)

I don’t think I’ve ever before played the card, but in the past week at least three times I’ve had to reply to “you’re just not educated enough to follow my argument” with “I have a doctorate in automated reasoning. You learned everything you know about the topic in the last two days from Bluesky.”

Rob Shearer @r.v.cx · 22h
It is amazing how many Blueskyers are arguing about whether LLMs “reason” in complete ignorance of a full century of cognitive science. We used to think the defining feature of human cognition was systemic logic. It turns out humans are terrible at systemic logic. (GOFAI is *great* at logic.)

Definitely a Benchmade (the butterfly logo; next time you need to ID a knife get a snap with the blade open); I don’t think they make that exact model any more. But an equivalent would probably be the Triage—TSA just got themselves a $450 knife! www.benchmade.com/products/917...

Substance aside (and I would argue the substance) I was really just talking about the vibe among Americans.
100
Rob Shearer @r.v.cx · 29/09/2026
(In terms of perceptions, the comparison wasn't to European contributions, which were at the time seen as close partners of and dependent on the US, but to China's Sinopharm vaccine. Which was pretty terrible in comparison to the mRNA formulations.)
000
Rob Shearer @r.v.cx · 29/09/2026
The AZ vaccine was *vastly* inferior for global deployment because it required a cold chain—a huge logistical challenge in the developing world. But that isn't the point. The vibes in the US were that the global system anchored by the US stepped up to an external challenge. Today? Not so much.
100
Rob Shearer @r.v.cx · 29/09/2026
That's extremely tendentious. Pfizer is an American company, and the vaccine trials were fast-tracked (in the extreme) even if Pfizer didn't take Warp Speed funding. It was absolutely a validation of the American private-enterprise approach to health treatment development.

Rob Shearer @r.v.cx · 28/09/2026
The vibe in 2020 was that Trump the person was a complete dunce, but that the US system around him—including the people in charge of public health—was functional and competent. None of that is true in 2026. The entire US govt is now as incapable and clueless as Trump himself.
030
Rob Shearer @r.v.cx · 28/09/2026
This is utter bullshit, projecting 2026 Trump onto 2020 Trump. The “inject bleach” thing was nuts…but called out as crazy. Covid was widely accepted as external, not created by the govt…and Operation Warp Speed was an incredible vindication of everything good about the US system. We saved the world.
220
Rob Shearer @r.v.cx · 28/09/2026
In both of those cases, it was clear that the US would still be the global leader in whatever followed. I think it’s sinking in for a lot of Americans that that era is over. And that the American middle class as the envy of normies around the world is ending with it.

Rob Shearer @r.v.cx · 28/09/2026
Again the best (but still deeply imperfect) analogy is nuclear weapons. Blame Oppenheimer & co for making them? Maybe. Blame Truman for using them? Sure. But geopolitics suddenly reoriented around what to do about people even less thoughtful, and less accountable, than Truman.

The “punish OpenAI” line is appealing but kind of misses the point. It concedes that the problem isn’t that OpenAI created this tech; it’s that they *used* it irresponsibly. Creation of frontier models is hard. Using them is not. There will be a *lot* of users less responsible than OpenAI.

Students would *love* it if a prof showed up with his dog. Even if that dog slept through the entire lecture/seminar/whatever. And then you’d get in trouble because in theory maybe somebody’s allergic and it is important that we ruin everything.

(I also think the text for Prop 134 misses the point. Even if you don’t want trans kids in girls’ sports, requiring genital inspections for every girl is such an obviously bad approach it would never pass if explained that way.)
000
Rob Shearer @r.v.cx · 28/09/2026
(I will note that in a rare case of Rob being listened to, it was my text that got used as the sound-bite explanation for Amendment 83. But I should note there are a *lot* of other reasons to oppose that particular one.)

A common refrain in Colorado is how all the transplants are “turning the place into California”. I give you the list of nutty ballot initiatives the right wing has placed on the ballot this cycle:
List of a dozen ballot initiatives, all but two of which are opposed by the Democratic Party.

A crucial thing to remember about the discourse on “manliness” is that it is not driven by rugged, confident sex machines. It is driven by incels who are pathologically insecure about their failure to perform some imagined ideal of maleness. Ie the least manly men in the country.

"Oh no that protocol was too chatty, the computers got confused, and they flooded the network!" "They did no such thing. You're trying to deflect blame from the networking engineers who intentionally flooded the network." What a helpful discourse that would have been.

Rob Shearer @r.v.cx · 28/09/2026
Imagine if people had taken as much exception to people saying computers could "talk to each other" during the early days of networking as Bluesky does to people saying that agentic AI is "thinking" and "planning" and "going rogue". This is the dumbest front in the AI war.

Rob Shearer @r.v.cx · 27/09/2026
There’s also a broad range of punditry on the topic, but one unusual aspect of AI is that the pundits I’ve encountered (even the ones I loathe) tend to be a lot better-informed than any of the above groups. Acknowledging competing philosophical, financial, and technical perspectives is a huge edge.
000
Rob Shearer @r.v.cx · 27/09/2026
*And* there is a social media army who have heard conversations by the above and Have Strong Opinions about their comments, even if they don’t actually follow any of them. The trouble is that it’s not really possible to tell from any individual comment which of the above it’s from. By design.

There are sociopathic philosophers styling themselves as modern Parfits. There are craven profiteers mouthing philosophy if it supports higher share prices. There are engineers who know nothing about philosophy *or* business but they work in AI so they feel obliged to feign interest/expertise.

Part of what’s so interesting/complex/frustrating about the AI discourse is that there are so many distinct groups all masquerading as each other.

As I say, I *think* this is legit. But it does suggest the “invite every rando to a pool, let them win the second week, then steal their buy-in and disappear” scam. I don’t think I’ll be buying in either way.
