Poetry Friday: And Suddenly It’s Fall
tangledon the pale spiresof the broken flowersof the lost summer-Mary Oliver It's Poetry Friday! Right on cue, the weather reminded us that this week marked the beginning of fall. The lines above from "The Snowshoe Hare" by Mary Oliver also reminded me that fall is in the air and inspired these lines. Although I love the word "autumn" (probably a more poetic word), sometimes "fall" just fits.

Poetry Friday: Inspired By Words
It's Poetry Friday! I love coming across writing invitations that work to get my creative juices flowing, especially when I'm stuck. In her mid-month Heart Beats newsletter this week, Georgia Heard shared an exercise she conducted during her workshop "Words That Sing and Soar" with Irene Latham given through The Poet's Studio. She chose five words to share with participants and asked them to write a poem using all five words.

We Need Diverse Books @weneeddiversebooks.bsky.social · 18/08/2026
Reading translated fiction is one way we can celebrate and connect to our tremendously diverse world. If you found this list helpful, consider engaging with it so it can reach as many readers as possible! And be sure to follow WNDB to discover even more diverse titles like this 📚❤️
Graphic where the background is a collage of multi-colored squares displaying different patterns of painted leaves, flowers, and fauna. There is a white pop-up window with rounded corners at the center. The logo for We Need Diverse Books is at the top of the window, followed by the name of the organization and a subtitle denoting it as a Nonprofit Organization. Body text beneath says, “Follow us to discover and support even more diverse stories like this!” Underneath the body text is a row of peach-colored icons indicating how people can engage with this post by liking, sharing, commenting, reposting, and saving. At the bottom of the white window is a light blue bubble containing the handle @WeNeedDiverseBooks.

Embarrassed/excited to share that my CNF essay about accidentally flooding my basement while doing laundry is up now at chicagostorypress.com. Editor Anne Beall was lovely to work with! And I've successfully done 2 million loads of laundry without flooding anything since writing this piece!

Working my way through 832 entries has unraveled my opinion on what makes a picture book excellent. It isn’t about top notch book design, the technical competence of the artist, compositional innovation, the medium, or the executional difficultly. A picture book is excellent when it makes us feel.

I just read Issue 14, Traditions & Rituals by Little Thoughts Press. It begins with beautiful cover art by Rachael Taylor—a quilt-like collection of different colors and interesting textures. This art speaks to me of the wonderful variety of multicultural stories shared in this issue. #kidlit

Hey, literary citizens! Got a minute? If so, please #AskYourLibrary to buy my newest children’s book, #NiceToEatYou, a funny read-aloud perfect for Halloween! (May or may not contain a witch. 🧙👀) For a request template or more info: karenyin.com/books/nice-t... Art by @carolinacoroa.bsky.social
Image features the cover of Nice to Eat You surrounded by library cards of the characters, with names like Lost Kid and Sweet Old Lady. The word "Eat" is written next to the word "Meet," which has been X-ed out. Behind her, leafless trees with haunted faces scream silently under a crescent moon. Text surrounding the cover reads: Please #AskYourLibrary to buy this book!," followed by book details:
