AI glasses face their first major government crackdown – Ars Technica
Applausi a scena aperta! > Norway has become the first major country to propose a temporary ban on the use of AI glasses in selected public places amid growing privacy concerns over wearable technology. > > The rich Scandinavian country’s center-left government said on Monday that it would introduce a law to parliament soon on a temporary ban for places such as parks, beaches, schools, and kindergartens. It will also set up an expert group to propose permanent national rules. > > “I am concerned about the introduction of powerful new technology where people risk being photographed, filmed, or recorded without their knowledge,” said Torgeir Micaelsen, Norway’s digitalization minister. A temporary ban “will give us time to conduct a thorough assessment and hold an informed debate that can lay the foundation for permanent regulation,” he said. Se funziona, ne compro due!! > The device comes in two versions, one with an infrared laser and the other with a blue laser, priced at US$988 and US$1,088 respectively, according to the company’s website, which said they would ship within 120 days of the receipt of a pre-order.It said both offered the same mosquito-killing performance, but the infrared version, with an invisible laser, was designed for indoor settings, while the blue laser version, with a visible beam, was better suited to gardens and outdoor use. > Judge Mehta said Penske and Chegg failed to show there was any actual agreement through which Google “promised to ‘sell’ Plaintiffs any specific amount of traffic – or any traffic whatsoever – in exchange for ‘buying’ their content”. > > There was no communication between Google and the publishers “from which mutual assent to engage in a transaction could plausibly be inferred”. > > Judge Mehta said: “Plaintiffs have pleaded only that they have an ‘expectation’ that Google will send them search traffic if they make their content available for free. But an expectation is not an agreement. It is simply how a general search engine works.” > > … > > But Judge Mehta found the publisher had not “plausibly alleged that general search and AI Overviews are separate products, as opposed to an integrated search experience”. OpenAI and Anthropic face FTC probe over AI safety risks
Aspettiamo a vedere l’esito dell’istruttoria… > The Federal Trade Commission is investigating OpenAI, Anthropic and other AI companies over potential safety risks posed by their products, an agency spokesperson told Axios Wednesday. > > **Why it matters:** The federal government has largely taken a hands-off approach to regulating AI, but the FTC investigation could signal a shift for the industry. > > **Driving the news:** FTC Chair Andrew Ferguson is preparing civil investigative demands that would compel AI executives to turn over documents and testify about the safety of their models, according to the New York Post, which first reported the news. > > * The probe has been underway for weeks, predating OpenAI’s disclosure that models it was testing escaped their sandbox and compromised parts of AI platform Hugging Face’s production infrastructure. > * OpenAI announced Monday that it would halt the release of its newest model, GPT-6.1 Astra, after it performed poorly on safety testing. > Source: _OpenAI and Anthropic face FTC probe over AI safety risks_ If you like this post, please consider sharing it.

Data Centre Silence – Lighthouse Reports
> Reporters made Freedom of Information requests in all 27 EU member states, asking for disclosure of the full set of indicators collected under the Energy Efficiency Directive. These data include total energy consumption, amount and type of renewable energy consumption, amount of waste heat reused, average waste heat temperature, number of cooling degree days (a tracker for quantifying how much energy is needed to cool a building) and cooling system setpoints, along with types of refrigerants used in the cooling and air conditioning equipment of the data centre computer room floor. They also include total water input and potable water input, among other metrics. > > … > > From the outset in October 2025, we faced non-disclosure. Ten countries told us they did not hold the figures relating to their own data centres, implying that they had no oversight of how these buildings impacted their energy efficiency goals and net zero commitments. > > A half-dozen more argued for blanket confidentiality to protect commercial interests. We requested reviews, decisions by oversight bodies and court rulings where possible. We also pushed back against the European Commission’s decision not to release the data, arguing that they had not sufficiently considered the public interest. In most of these efforts we were unsuccessful Source: _Data Centre Silence – Lighthouse Reports_ If you like this post, please consider sharing it.

One More Reason Americans Hate AI: It Does Nothing for Them
Questo dell’IA al 3.63% Quindi un livello di investimenti senza precedenti per i datacenter MA nessuna crescita dell’occupazione nelle costruzioni, come invece era avvenuto con le rinnovabili durante l’amministrazione precedente > There is also, however, a more prosaic reasons for the public’s dislike of AI: This is a technology of, by and for oligarchs, with hardly any of the benefits trickling down to regular Americans. > > Or to put it a different way, never before in history have corporations spent so much money — playing a major role in soaring interest rates — to create so few jobs. > > Data centers themselves are basically banks of blinking servers that employ hardly any workers. Here’s data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics on a category that includes data centers as well as a number of other activities. Employment in that category has declined since Nov. 2022, often cited as the start of the AI boom because it’s the month ChatGPT was released to the public: > > … > > Still, won’t the AI boom at least temporarily create a lot of construction jobs? It will create some, and Jared Bernstein has a good post on how to ensure that these are good jobs. But all indications are that AI investment will create far fewer jobs, even in construction, than expected. > > … > > Given this spending surge, one should expect a sharp rise in nonresidential construction spending — basically construction for businesses rather than housing. > > But that’s not what we actually see. Nonresidential construction rose rapidly during the Biden years, largely thanks to that administration’s promotion of clean energy. But nonresidential construction has basically flatlined under Trump, despite the immense AI investment boom: Source: _One More Reason Americans Hate AI: It Does Nothing for Them_ If you like this post, please consider sharing it.

AKA “di lupi e di peli”… > Mark Zuckerberg says Meta’s A.I. push is a tremendous success. “Our investments in A.I. are accelerating every major part of our core business,” he has told investors. “Every sign that we’re seeing in our own work and across the industry gives us confidence in this investment.” > > But when Meta files its taxes, it tells the Internal Revenue Service a different story. It claims that its A.I. data centers are a giant experiment that could fail, according to four people with knowledge of the company’s operations. > > It does this so it can tap into a tax credit intended for research and experimentation. It’s an aggressive interpretation of the tax break, which Meta embraced to claim billions of dollars in tax credits for data center expansion. > > … > > Indeed, Meta’s own accountants recognize that the strategy is on shaky legal ground. Da archiviare alla voce “Apple che difende i diritti dei propri clienti dai soprusi dei governi” > Apple’s explanation came in a July letter to Rep. Jamie Raskin, a Maryland Democrat and ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, who earlier this year launched an investigation into the Justice Department’s role in the removal of the apps from Apple’s and Google’s app stores and the impact on constitutionally protected speech. The letter has not previously been reported. > > Raskin said the move suggests that Apple may be “working with the government to violate its customers’ First Amendment rights to record and report on the activities of their own government” in a response letter sent Monday to Apple’s senior director of government affairs, Timothy Powderly. Raskin added that there’s “no evidence” such apps were used to conduct the Dallas shooting and directed the company to conduct a new, independent review as to whether the apps violate Apple’s policies. BCBSA Analysis How AI Coding Tools Affect Healthcare Costs | Blue Cross Blue Shield
“coding” in questo contesto significa l’attribuzione del codice delle prestazioni sanitarie, non il software > * A sharp increase in patients being documented as having complex conditions appears to have added an estimated $942 million in healthcare spending for BCBS companies between 2023 and 2025, driving higher premiums and out-of-pocket costs for families, employers and taxpayers. > * There is a clear disconnect between coding and treatment — our research shows that coding for care has changed, but there is no evidence of corresponding change in care delivered. > * Patients often fell into a higher-cost billing category after a secondary diagnosis, a condition identified in addition to the patient’s primary reason for receiving care. This secondary diagnosis may be derived from single laboratory values, making it particularly well-suited for detection by AI tools. Approximately 70% of the additional costs, more than $650 million, were tied to secondary diagnoses. > * This growth in complex coding comes as more than 60% of hospital systems began using AI coding tools, which can document patient visits, analyze lab reports and doctors’ notes. > Source: _BCBSA Analysis How AI Coding Tools Affect Healthcare Costs | Blue Cross Blue Shield_ If you like this post, please consider sharing it.

> When Anthropic, the artificial intelligence giant, unveiled findings from its new biology lab last week, its scientists claimed to have used A.I. agents to discover new enzymes with promise for biotechnology. > > Some scientists were quick to cast doubt on the achievement. The issue instead, he added, is whether Anthropic’s A.I. actually reasoned its way to the results, or whether it was guided to them based partly on his own work. > > “My concern is that this information was used to train future versions of the models,” Dr. Mestre said of his own research. “I think it’s important to raise this possibility.” Source: _Did Anthropic’s A.I. Alabama takes TikTok to trial over teen mental health claims
> Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall is taking TikTok and its Chinese parent company ByteDance to trial beginning Monday in Montgomery state court, in the first case against the company to reach a jury in the broader litigation over social media’s effects on teen wellbeing, according to Reuters. > > … > > Alabama argues that TikTok’s design — an unending scroll of videos — renders it more habit-forming than any other social media platform, with its algorithm steering minors toward violent and self-harm-related content in ways that have worsened teen mental health and sent emergency room admissions for self-injury climbing steeply across the state. The lawsuit also accuses TikTok of falsely representing that it limits young users’ access to sexual and violent content — a claim the state says TikTok made so that Google , Apple, and Microsoft would classify its app as safe for teens in their app stores — and of misleading users about the Chinese government’s access to their data. Alabama is seeking financial penalties and other relief. Source: _Alabama takes TikTok to trial over teen mental health claims_ If you like this post, please consider sharing it.

AI advice suppresses people’s willingness to say “I don’t know”, even when the advice is wrong and accuracy is incentivized
Una macchina per generare effetti Dunning Kruger > Merely having access to AI nearly eliminated participants’ willingness to suspend judgment, and this held whether the advice was actively requested or simply displayed. Consequently, participants answered more questions but were correct about a third as often as when AI was unavailable-yet their confidence nearly doubled. Incentivizing accuracy and penalizing inaccuracy led participants to seek and follow AI advice less, answer more accurately, and suspend judgment more often, though still far less than when AI was unavailable. As AI suggestions grow ubiquitous and unsolicited, they may not simply affect answer accuracy; they may even alter the metacognitive threshold at which people decide whether they know enough to answer. The Pentagon wants $30 million to build an AI-powered lie detector | MIT Technology Review
The US government wants to spend $30.3 million over the next five years on an improved form of lie detector, according to a Department of Defense budget request. The program, called Polygraph+ or Polygraph Next, will focus on scoring algorithms that use artificial intelligence and machine learning and on a technique called “standoff sensing,” which refers to the ability to take physiological readings without attaching a device to a subject’s person. > * While most (89%) shoppers don’t fully trust AI recommendations, 76% of them have used AI to make purchases in the past year, according to a SmartCustomer survey of nearly 1,200 U.S. consumers released Monday. > * A third of survey respondents said they made a regrettable purchase based on an AI recommendation. ssstt… L’Intelligenza artificiale ti spia! > I sent the mechanism and two questions to press@openai.com and privacy@openai.com on 14 September: why __obi is classified as an analytics cookie, and whether a user who grants analytics consent and refuses marketing consent still receives it. The reply came from OpenAI Support. It acknowledged the inquiry, said the observations would be shared internally for review, and did not answer either question. The script-load observation above was made after the inquiry was sent. I will update this post if OpenAI responds Source: _ChatGPT now knows what you do on other websites via ad collector_ If you like this post, please consider sharing it.

Don’t be fooled by this summer of AI hype  | MIT Technology Review
Sono, di base, gli stessi concetti che ho illustrato più compiutamente nel mio articolo su Repubblica di questa settimana (accesso libero) > Claims of incipient, dangerous superintelligence are not based in good scientific or engineering practice. Rather, they are narratives based in ideologies of transhumanism, eugenics, and wishful thinking about imagined future digital humans. > > … > > Describing them as “superintelligence” or “rogue models” ascribes agency to products rather than to the companies building them. This framing markets these companies’ products as “superhuman” and, at the same time, helps the companies evade accountability for their actions. > > Instead of OpenAI being prosecuted for creating malware that hacked another company, press releases, news outlets, media personalities, and lawmakers refer to “rogue models” as if they acted on their own. Instead of researchers being questioned about their companies’ habit of plagiarizing academics’ work or using customer data to train models without consent, the public’s imagination is redirected to fears about what the future might hold upon the arrival of fictional superintelligent machines. Chi lo avrebbe mai detto ? (ehm. si.. io… dico chi altri ?) > Huang said Thursday at a Goldman Sachs conference that “the reason why there’s so much conversation today about cybersecurity is because the industry is getting ready to launch some products.” “And what better way to create demand than to create a problem?” he said at the event. “Who doesn’t want their market to be hysterical about their product and line up around the corner for it?” Source: _Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang: AI fears designed to generate cybersecurity business_ If you like this post, please consider sharing it.
