What’s more is that he wants to charge council tax payers for the privilege

And it’s all money that would otherwise be spent on healthcare.

400 buses a day? That means a bus every 3 minutes day and night. There can’t be many places in the UK with that frequency.

Traditional tram stops in the middle of the road, without even an island for waiting passengers to stand on, never seemed to raise any issues either.

Actually, still a good idea in the right place, but certainly not on a major cycle route.

Yes I remember that particular crusade, too. He was also responsible for Exhibition Road and removing the footway/carriageway separation.

Another feature of the right is the need to oppose, on principle, anything that progressives support, without thought as to whether it's a good or bad thing.

It's quite interesting: 15-20 years ago Daniel was in the forefront of promoting cycle superhighways in London. He persuaded Boris Johnson, then Mayor, to promote these an persuaded the boroughs they should go along with them.

Nice idea in a beautiful Victorian arcade in Halifax

The circumstances seem to make the claim that these were terrorists increasingly implausible: - so clever they left no digital footprint - so stupid they were very easily caught - they have been released on bail - Trump says they knew all about the 5 and were closely monitoring them

Amazing. We have had free local bus travel for over 67s for more than 50 years and free throughout England for 20 years. In London it’s also included free travel on tubes and trains.

We changed the definition of footway parking in London in 1996 just to avoid this problem. It’s now a contravention to park anywhere not on the carriageway unless specifically authorised.

Hyperloop still hasn’t worked out how to do junctions or anything other than very gentle curves.

They should be thinking about spending the same money on improving public transport and active travel instead.

So the LibDems are talking about a big cut in fuel duty. This would mark a big growth in subsidies to motorists which would benefit the wealthy the most. They drive the most and drive the least fuel efficient cars.

A fascinating story showing both the positives (widely forecast) and the negatives (not at all forecast) of the new bridge. Lessons for everywhere else thinking that a new road will give unalloyed blessings

But not on any basis which is related to the number of speeding fines that they issue. For every extra speeding fine the police issue they get precisely nothing.

The police don’t get any money from speeding fines. It all goes to the Treasury

Just to repeat: 29 pedestrians were killed on the pavement last year. 28 were killed by cars and one by a mobility scooter. None were killed by cycles or e-bikes.

But not, I think, predated by much. I remember the arguments with LT in the early ‘80s when swore blind it was impossible to put BR services onto the underground map.

While DVLA says its database is 98% accurate, this just means the name/address boxes have been filled in. As many as 20% of keeper details may be fabricated (like in this case) or non-existent. DVLA doesn’t check.

The main reason for permit schemes is to stop non-residents from taking up all the space available. This is what residents pay for.

And how much does it cost you to drive there? Not just petrol costs but taking everything into account. At 60p-£1 per mile your driving costs exceed your parking costs if you have to drive much more than 2 miles each way. If less think about walking.

Where are NFBUK in addressing the 29 pedestrians , some of them disabled, who were hit and killed last year while on the pavement? None of them hit by cyclists - 28 hit by cars and one by a mobility scooter.

The 1903 Royal Commission on London’s Transport was set up because of the ‘intolerable congestion’ on London’s roads. It also found that, if nothing was done, London’s streets would be a foot deep in horse manure within 20 years.

The right have adopted the American approach - if the left propose something it must be wrong on principle and thus opposed. No thought on the substance at all.

It says something for the concept of powerful mayors that the two most successful interventions in transport in London in recent years - ULEZ and congestion charge - required huge political bravery.

But the traders I spoke to in Kingston say that people would rather drive for an hour each way for free parking rather than pay 50p an hour.

This comes round every year. It’s not a viable solution to anything. They may be able to get something to fly but finding places for it to land or take off is a far harder problem

This came through and I thought; how sensible to do this. Not often you can see a government doing this well

Not just through traffic. As much as 30% of traffic in high streets can be just searching for a parking spot. A consequence of parking that is too cheap, it adds nothing to local footfall but does add pollution and unpleasantness.

10 years ago, I advised the German car makers not to bother designing any new internal combustion engines. They - apart from BMW - scoffed thinking that Angela Merkel would save them from EVs.

Even police camera enforcement is not systematic as they do not have enough back office staff to follow through on all the speeding they detect

Nick Lester-Davis @quinlet.bsky.social · 01/08/2026
Traffic enforcement based on a combination of staffed efforts and cameras can be sustained and is effective. In London, bus lane contraventions were cut by 80% after 6 months and then sustained.

1 ½ minutes is far less than the normal variation in trip length for a journey of more than about 3 miles. You wouldn’t notice it. Maybe you would notice a 10 minute loss but the writer wouldn’t the just describe it as ‘hours lost’ but would be more graphic
111
Nick Lester-Davis @quinlet.bsky.social · 18/07/2026
Doing the maths. 1 hour lost each month is less than 3 minutes each working day or 1 ½ minutes each way.

Many councils in London no longer allow front gardens to be turned into parking, both to prevent loss of on-street part and loss of natural drainage of storm water.
