RE: mastodon.social/@eff/11650084919594… Very cool to see Bridgy Fed featured in the latest @eff.org piece 🙏🏼
Bridging is an important facet of POSSE, but also something more people should consider, even if they don’t run their own websites. For example, if you don’t want to create a Threads account just to interact with your one friend who uses that platform, you shouldn’t have to. The good news is, you don’t. There are several bridging services, like Fedisky, RSS Parrot, and pinhole, but Bridgy Fed is currently the simplest to use, so we’ll focus on that.

This is the key that makes ATProto such a winner for data ownership. You own the data. The apps, platforms, and services that everyone uses only augment it. You get to choose where your source of truth lives. Everything else is just distribution […] [Original post on mastodon.social]
This has deep implications for the lifecycle of products. If a product gets shut down, the data doesn’t disappear. It’s still in its users’ repos. Someone can build a replacement that makes this data comes back to life. Someone can build a new product that incorporates some of that data, or lets users choose what to import. Someone can build an alternative projection of existing data—a forked product.

Also appreciate the shout-out to Bridgy Fed! 🗣️ People, Not Platforms
Both ActivityPub and AT Protocol can and do co-exist. This co-existence is perhaps best emphasized by the outstanding work of Bridgy Fed project, which connects ActivityPub, AT Protocol, and other protocols together allowing for interoperability and community that crosses between protocols. If you wanted to summarise this letter on a t-shirt, it would be “People > Protocols > Platforms”.

This is why we started @anewsocial. We cannot build an open social web by raising new walls, we do it by building bridges. Thank you @thisismissem for writing this. Proud to be alongside the other co-signers. hachyderm.io/@thisismissem/11515758…
There does not have to be a “winning” protocol. We do not build a better open social web for everyone by fighting and arguing about protocol superiority. That is not how (highlight start) we achieve a better open social web. Instead, we must work together, cross-pollinate and share ideas, and participate within each other's communities with respect and mutual understanding (highlight end). Arguing between us only emboldens those that seek to derail and destroy efforts to build an open social web.
