Whenever some important guy expresses support for artists, I wonder what I would make for them if they wanted a custom cosplay. Not knowing Mr. Leo XIII's fandoms (soccer??) I can only propose Old Hubba from Fire Emblem: Awakening because I think it would be really funny.

I feel like my opinion on resin printers is uncommon in the cosplay community but I think they need to be regulated and it's wild to me that they're sold on the open market the way they are. It's practically impossible for your average person to operate them safely.

Absolutely. Laser cutters and UV printers are generally sold WITH air filtration, and 99% of the time they're in a garage, not a home. HOWEVER, resin printers are broadly sold without any filter or much education about the dangers, so your average person is sticking one in their craft room.

The real answer is that we use makerspaces and develop community hubs as cosplayers so we can share the tech and all take advantage of it affordably instead of everyone having a tool that sits with the power off for 360 days of the year.

Esp when technology changes so fast now... a lot of these home versions of tech that used to be used industrially for decades at higher price points are as much subject to forced obsolescence as your current smartphone.

There are some very cool projects out there that have required very specialty tools but sometimes I'm like, sending that to a laser cutting service for a couple hundred bucks is better than a $3k machine + filter + tools etc that will take up workshop space for years.

Laser cutters, UV printers, even resin printers –– I don't consider these worth the cost or effort or workshop space for 99.9999% of cosplayers. Most of what you're paying for is mostly time + precision for what... 1-4 projects a year? The pressure to have these tools is overblown.

As far as tools go for cosplay, I think every cosplayer should have a sewing machine and a rotary tool. People who are really serious about the hobby can also generally make a serger, a basic FDM 3D printer and an electronic cutter very worth their costs over 5-10 years. That's it.

We are building a full costume for a commercial in one week and it's the cutest/funniest thing, every single video we've sent to the client showing movement and shape includes people laughing. Delivery is on Friday.

the FW plan is to do just about every character's small accessories and then circle back around with the armour, with exceptions for characters for whom their armour is pretty easy to just include outright. (A single piece like Sirocco's pauldron or very small/contained ones etc)

A softer blonde for the hair, more natural curls with the top in the same shapes… more fullness and ruching to the fabric… the bottom of the skirt having tiers with some sort of weird dagging… tiny trims to make edges more interesting… a velvet corset with a taffeta dress… it could be fun as hell.

I’m still getting a feel for characters in FW to see who I wanna cosplay and I think it’s like… the characters I wanna make the most I don’t necessarily wanna wear, and the closest balance between the two is Olympia.

This is actually one of my favourite armour pieces I’ve gone in the past few years. I don’t usually take on armour with a ton of filigree because it takes a lot of time but this one having a lot of flat tops helped. Filigree with peaks on a 3D surface is where it gets squirrelly.

It really is!! I didn’t expect it bc it’s kind of silly in concept but it’s very thoughtfully made. Momofuku Ando was more of an inventor than strictly a food guy and part of that included business alliances to grow WITH competitors. And the art!!! The projector shows! The life sized recreations!
