Felix Bloch (b. Oct 23, 1905) explained how electrons move through crystals. His name is also on the Bloch sphere, the standard picture of a single qubit's state.
Quantum Greats slide: Felix Bloch, b. 1905. Showed how quantum mechanics explains electrons in solids.

Niels Bohr (b. Oct 7, 1885) gave the atom discrete energy levels in 1913. Neutral-atom quantum computers store their qubits in exactly those kinds of levels.
Quantum Greats slide: Niels Bohr, b. 1885. Taught us how to think about quantum physics.

In 1927, Clinton Davisson and Lester Germer bounced electrons off a nickel crystal and watched them diffract like waves: direct proof that matter has a wavelength. Both were born in October. A short thread on October birthdays in quantum physics.
Quantum Greats slide: Clinton Davisson, b. 1881. Turned the bold idea of matter waves into measured fact.Quantum Greats slide: Lester Germer, b. 1896. Demonstrated electron diffraction, confirming matter waves.

QuEra is the anchor tenant of the Roadrunner Quantum Lab, which opened this week in Albuquerque with $25 million from New Mexico. It will be used for photonics and optics testing, plus on-site classical computing for hybrid quantum-classical work. Scissors down. Doors open.

Quantum computers are moving into computing centers built for classical infrastructure, where floor space and power matter more than physics benchmarks. QuEra runs neutral atoms at room temperature, no cryogenics, in about the space of two dining tables.
