Good features and rather queer whiskers. His eyebrows are somehow darker; they look particularly arched and as if they might move a good deal. His mouth is wide and his lips are thin, and except for his whiskers, he's quite clean shaven. He gives a sort of sense of looking like an actor. — H. James

We are sad to report that Joe Caldwell, the last surviving writer of the original Dark Shadows, died on July 13 at the age of 97 after suffering a stroke. He is credited with helping to develop Barnabas with fellow writer Ron Sproat, drawing on their experiences as gay men in the pre-Stonewall era.

On this day, May 28, 1933, actor John Karlen was born. A favourite of mine, Willie Loomis, is his most known role as the Renfield to Barnabas in Dark Shadows. A chameleon actor, Karlen played his roles with panache. As Alex Jenkins, he was the perfect companion to Quentin Collins. Sorely missed.
