"What I had not realized is that extremely short exposures to a relatively simple computer program could induce powerful delusional thinking in quite normal people." - Joseph Weizenbaum, *Computer Power and Human Reason* (1976) reading the context of this passage is truly incredible
clear evidence that people were conversing with
the computer as if it were a person who could be appropriately and
usefully addressed in intimate terms. I knew of course that people
form all sorts of emotional bonds to machines, for example, to mu¬
sical instruments, motorcycles, and cars. And I knew from long ex¬
perience that the strong emotional ties many programmers have to
their computers are often formed after only short exposures to their
machines. What I had not realized is that extremely short exposures
to a relatively simple computer program could induce powerful de¬
lusional thinking in quite normal people. This insight led me to
attach new importance to questions of the relationship between the
individual and the computer, and hence to resolve to think about
them.
3. Another widespread, and to me surprising, reaction to the
ELIZA program was the spread of a belief that it demonstrated a
general solution to the problem of computer understanding of natu¬
ral language. In my paper, I had tried to say that no general solution
to that problem was possible, i.e., that language is understood only
in contextual frameworks, that even these can be shared by people
to only a limited extent, and that consequently even people are not
embodiments of any such general solution. But these conclusions
were often ignored. In any case, ELIZA was such a small and simple
step. Its contribution was, if any at all, only to vividly underline what
many others had long ago discovered, namely, the importance of
context to language understanding. The subsequent, much more
elegant, and surely more important work of Winograd5 in computer
comprehension of English is currently being misinterpreted just as
ELIZA was. This reaction to ELIZA showed me more vividly than
anything I had seen hitherto the enormously exaggerated attribu¬
tions an even well-educated audience is capable of making, even
strives to make, to a technology it does not understand.

I decided to tackle the most daunting task I mentioned in my last update and build a new markdown rendering backend.

Most of the last week I was sleeping 12-16 hours a day due to some illness and dealing with several crucial tools I use every day all failing at once, but somehow I still managed to get this working!

Introducing Scribe! Our shiny new markdown renderer with many fun extensions to explore!There are several others which will be showcased more when I finish the first pass of styles for them, but the biggest new feature is...
CSS in Posts

The old renderer converts all possible characters to HTML entities, making it impossible to embed HTML/CSS into posts.

But Scribe instead parses any HTML tags and rebuilds them at the output, removing anything that could break the page layout or cause issues on the way, letting you make all kinds of CSS crimes that are impossible in most other places!You aren't limited to just text styling either, you can do full designs with divs and background colors!
oh look columns

surely this will be useful!

because these use fancy flexbox they automatically resize depending on their relative contents
another column!

having just one column does a poor job showing things off
You can even use one of those cool syntax highlighting generators originally built for other great sites:

const FIRST_AGE: AgeRuleset = {
  schema: deepmerge(defaultSchema, {
    attributes: {
      "*": ["style"],
    },
    tagNames: ["video", "audio", "aside"], // consistency with current rules,
  }),
  // Wednesday, June 29, 2022 6:00:00 PM GMT
  cutoffDate: new Date(1656525600000),
  className: "",
  additionalVisitor: noop,
  singleLineBreaks: false,
  forceAttachmentsToTop: true,
  attachmentLayoutBehavior: "v1",
  ask: {
    allowEmbeddedMedia: true,
  },
};

syntax highlighting by codehost

This is just the beginning!

did you see The Demolitionist? have you seen The Demolitionist? will you see the Demolitionist??
The Demolitionist walking away from an explosion, a corpse lies prone in the background

she is wearing body-armor and a Casshern-like muzzle that covers the lower half of her face - in fact there are a lot of similarities to Casshern in the film

the only thing is that this was a low budget film that came out a decade before the live-action Casshern movieThe Demolitionist staring into your soul, muzzle firmly in place but eyes gloweringThe Demolitionist about to waste a dude, pretty much her full suit is visible and her short spiky extremely 90s hair is clearly visible in the movie-blued moonlight

her regalia is very "real" like early in Batman Begins or something, weapons and tools are strapped to her body tactically and not hidden in Z Space like most superheroines do for clean lines, even rough than a character like Joanna Dark (Perfect Dark) or Selene (Underworld)

i cannot think of a single superheroine or similar that has this kind of armored catsuit with very strappy practical weapon placement outside of maybe a couple of comic books

it is *realistic* no, neither is Nolan's Batman, but it *feels* more real than most

i keep thinking of like Elektra, who is cool, but whose costume is more of a suggestion than anything

Niobe, Alice (RE), even the likes Tank Girl or Furiosa who is more rugged feels less practical

like, do not get me wrong, The Demolitionist is not Sarah Connor territory, but one step removed to still nail that low-power gritty superhero aesthetic

i have not posted any new threads in over a month but i just got blocked by Benn Jordan for posting this in reply to him whining about how he hand drew art and still gets accused of being slop he has also gone through and blocked *everyone* in what used to be a huge thread on his page
screenshot showing Benn fucking Jordan has blocked me for pointing out his AI slop bullshiti should have gotten a "before" screenshot but i did not expect him to ban fucking everybody who said anything so fast

above are two posts where Ben talks about getting a drawing tablet and making images himself

now there is one comment left here and only 15 on the parent post (including his own!)

climate and cognitive impacts of gen ai in this thread most people are focused on "can this tool be useful" and ignore its real-world impact to me, it should not matter how useful a tool is when it has such widespread ongoing negative outcomes for everybody
