Identifying that a protein variant exists is just the beginning. The challenge is determining exactly which variant is present. Researchers explored single-molecule protein sequencing to identify hemoglobin variants from patient samples by observing variant-specific amino acid substitutions.

Pinpointing hemoglobin variants has posed to be a challenge. Researchers at Stanford University have leveraged protein sequencing with Quantum-Si to characterize hemoglobin variants from whole blood. By achieving direct, single-molecule sequencing, ambiguity between variants can be resolved.
