"Plenty of things can happen at the market!" Gale begins counting with his fingers. "Getting kidnapped, getting robbed, getting trampled, getting sucked into another shard—"

"She's not you, Eir, pretty sure that doesn't happen to just anyone."

"Why…?"

Soleil stares from her spot atop the cliff to the scene below. Specifically, she looks at Misija, broken and bruised, surrounded by Bozjan soldiers. They knew as well as she did that Misija didn't have long to live.

She should be by her side during these final moments, but instead, Misija is in the hands of the enemy. The enemy she just sacrificed herself to save.

Why… Why?

She can see Misija's lips moving, but not what's being said. Is she telling them secrets? That she loves Soleil? Was saving them a mistake she'll regret in the afterlife?

Tears make her sight blurry, but she sees him—the Warrior of Light—kneel down next to Misija. How dare he? How dare he act as though he cares about her?

She can't see it, can't see much of anything anymore, but Soleil knows when her love breathes her last.

"Ah, allow me to introduce myself properly. I'm—"

"Guards! Get in here! There is—"

Gale presses down on the piano's keys again, harder this time. The sharp sound cuts the man off. "It's rude to interrupt, especially when you asked in the first place. Besides, my associates have already left your men… indisposed." He smiles softly. "It's just you and me here, Captain Shav."

14. Let's do my fanfic WIP, I'm doing a somewhat longer fic that's from Gemna's POV as she meets and mentors the boys. It's fun to see things from her angle and how she sort of "adopts" them/becomes a big maternal figure in their lives.

Gale turns his gaze to a spot on the wall. "Laurent was well regarded in the village—he lived a good life there. But I… I ruined it for him. I've been trying to find Laurent to return something the village stole from him when he was exiled."

Gemna can't hold her tongue any longer. "Is that really it? You've only been chasing your childhood friend for five years to return something to him?"

"Yes? That doesn't seem strange to me…"

"Idiot."

Gale snaps his head back towards Gemna, anger writ plain on his face. "If it's idiotic to try and right a wrong, then forgive me—"

"No, you misunderstand." Gemna rolls her eyes with a sigh. "Never mind. You'll get it someday." Well. Hopefully.

"I already told Gemna I wouldn't be a consort," Laurent says flatly as he gives Gale a vaguely annoyed look.

"…That… is not what I meant…" Gale bites back a laugh at the absurdity of the statement, then continues. "No, something that'd make use of your actual skills. Surely you're tired of having to go into hiding after every other job?"

Laurent huffs. "Yes, it is tiring. What do you have in mind?"

"I just…" Gale lies on his back again and throws an arm over his eyes, speaking to the ceiling as if it were his friend and confidant. "I just want to be near him. Do I need anything more?" Do I even deserve more? He left the last question unsaid, even though no one was there to hear it.

Regardless, Gale's mind responds with unbidden thoughts. About how Laurent's eyes lit up when he was happy, even if he wasn't smiling. How he would get shy if you teased him just the right way. How he'd grumble and sometimes pout when Gemna lectured him about something.

About his soft lips, about his beautiful hair, about his strong hands and the nape of his neck and how his voice would sound when he whispered his name—

Gale sighs, no longer having the energy to be angry at his thoughts. "It isn't as if they'll go away anyway." The ceiling provides no commentary, and the silence finally lulls Gale to a fitful slumber.

"Would that truly be so bad…?" He sits down next to Kris, placing the basket in front of them. "Means that I don't need to do it anymore."

"That is true." Kris's smile becomes more genuine as he watches Laurent pull out some food containers. "Are we having a picnic? What a lovely idea! The weather is perfect."

Laurent feels his cheeks heat up, and he clears his throat. "W-well, you do need to eat, and I figured you could use a little more time away…"

Kris chuckles. "You're always so thoughtful, my love." He gives Laurent a peck on the cheek before picking up one of the smaller boxes with a grin. "And you even brought me lemon cakes!"

Laurent sighs and squats down, grabbing Kris's hand. However, when Kris tries to pull him in, Laurent doesn't move, and he huffs. "Did you think I'd fall for that?"

Kris pouts. "You usually do."

Gale sighs. "You shouldn't go without protective gear, no matter your mastery of the weapon."

"The gloves are more of a hindrance than a help! I can barely move my hands with them on."

"And now you can barely move one at all because of the burns."

Laurent's husband continues to frown at him before tsking. "I can't believe you can't trust my handiwork!" Gale climbs up two steps before looking back at Laurent with a smirk. "You've never seen sturdier stairs in your li—"

The third step gives way with a thunderous snap, sending Gale's leg through the resulting hole. He curses under his breath and attempts to free himself, but the second step groans concernedly under his full weight. Gale stops and is forced to look back helplessly at Laurent while stuck in the trap of his own making.

Gale always found singing calming. Setting aside all of his fears and worries for a few moments to focus on the music helps him sort out his thoughts—usually.

His rather abrupt realization that night left him feeling confused and on edge, and he's sure the change in mood didn't go unnoticed. Gemna had remarked on more than one occasion that he 'needed to figure it out already', as if it were all as easy as walking up to his friend and telling him he loved him.

While Gale wishes for nothing more than to do just that, questions and worries plague him. What if it pushed Laurent away, or made everything worse? Gale wished that everything could return to how it was—or if nothing else, be able to sing forever so he'd never have to think about it.

But eventually, Gale finishes his song.

But right now, the alley—the past few alleys, Laurent recalls with a curse—were deathly quiet, and there wasn't a soul to be seen.

Hm, that man doesn't seem to know anything—perhaps my intuition is wrong on this one. Gale had finally found a promising lead on Laurent, where he was last seen in this area about a month ago. He'd known this was not just an area you wander into, so Gale surmised that Laurent likely lived around here—him, or the person who helped him to disappear whenever his jobs were done.

But it also meant that Gale had to search blindly for any further information and be careful about it. Neighborhoods like these know very well how to stay out of each other's business and keep quiet about anything they do know.
