We've always talked about computer programs as having goals or beliefs ("The ATM won't give me money; it knows I'm overdrawn"). Opposing it is a bit silly. To me the main issue is that some LLM manufacturers don't seem to use this language metaphorically...

It's important to remember that the AI doom scenario assumes not only that intelligence is a single well-defined thing, but also that intelligence solves literally every single problem, and that in every conflict overwhelming intelligence always wins. This is just not how anything works.

110 1
Quentin Ruyant @qruy.eurosky.social · 07/10/2026
110 1
Quentin Ruyant @qruy.eurosky.social · 07/10/2026
110 1
Quentin Ruyant @qruy.eurosky.social · 06/10/2026
110 1
Quentin Ruyant @qruy.eurosky.social · 06/10/2026

Quentin Ruyant @qruy.eurosky.social · 01/10/2026
Yes, or maybe we have a case where the way to extend an old terminology to a new domain is underdetermined (as often happens in science). However for now I'm still more tempted to say that the application to LLM is metaphorical or fictional (as when talking about characters in a videogame, say)

It's definitely legitimate to take credit for our subconscious processes, as long as they were intentionally regulated at some point. If conscious intentions entirely disappear from the picture, I'm not sure

Quentin Ruyant @qruy.eurosky.social · 30/09/2026
I also tend to think that there is some kind of phenomenology associated even with abstract cognition (not a mainstream view I agree) so that access consciousness ultimately rests on phenomenal consciousness, and that the non-decomposability/unity of it is essential

Quentin Ruyant @qruy.eurosky.social · 30/09/2026
It seems to be that we normally reserve the words "think" and "understand" in ordinary language for the high level, conscious monitoring process, even though it rests on a great amount of subconscious processes
241 4
Quentin Ruyant @qruy.eurosky.social · 30/09/2026
Good article, although I disagree with most of it! I don't think all the subconscious processes that are described deserve to be called "thinking" or "understanding" on the normal use of these words. I only think about the city once it becomes conscious, even though it popped up involuntarily

I certainly disagree that these questions weren't raised before just because there was no "proof of concept" available. That rarely stops philosophers: there have been all sorts of thought experiments on these issues for decades. "Could a machine think" is not a new question at all
