How real is REAL REAL? I once received a review that stated two problems in the opposite directions (e.g., the paper is too detached from A ... [next paragraph] the paper is over-reliant on A). I had no choice but to have a nuanced reply basically asking "what do you mean?"

Rookie corresponding author here — Is this what people wake up to every day? These are junk emails I received over Saturday, all from predatory journals, and with bizarre wording like: “We expect a prompt response within 24 hours to avoid the need for re-asking.” Was it like this before the AI era?

Finally, if you want to share your Neon data in a standard format, PyNeon can convert raw recordings to Motion-BIDS and — very recently — Eye-Tracking-BIDS formats @bidsstandard.bsky.social, making the data easier to understand and analyze for researchers unfamiliar with Neon.

If you care about fixation history — for example, for gaze prediction — so do we. That’s why PyNeon also includes a dynamic scanpath estimation method, mapping fixations from previous video frames onto the current one using frame-by-frame optical flow estimation.

One of the biggest challenges in mobile eye-tracking is making sense of gaze in a dynamic reference frame. PyNeon lets you project gaze and fixations onto a surface using AprilTags, ArUco markers, or a visible contour, with all parameters fully exposed and customizable.

Want to analyze eye-movement data around events of interest? The Epochs class makes it easy to segment raw data into epochs of flexible size and type — your choice. We also added plotting and conversion tools to help move your results closer to publication-ready figures.

Data from gaze, blinks, to scene video are organized into classes containing Pandas objects or OpenCV VideoCapture handles. You can crop, interpolate, concatenate, and process your data in just a few lines of code, with syntax inspired by Pandas, MNE, and SciPy.

PyNeon: A Python package for the analysis of Neon multimodal mobile eye-tracking data - Behavior Research Methods
Mobile eye-tracking has revolutionized the study of human behavior and cognition by enabling researchers to record eye movements in the real world. However, the dynamic and multimodal nature of mobile eye-tracking data also introduces significant analytical challenges, including the alignment, integration, and interpretation of complex data. To fill these gaps, we present PyNeon, a versatile, community-oriented Python package designed to streamline the analysis of mobile eye-tracking, motion, and video data from the Neon eye-tracking system (Pupil Labs GmbH). We describe how PyNeon provides accessible APIs for reading, preprocessing, epoching, and exporting Neon data. Furthermore, it supports advanced video processing such as mapping between eye movement data and real-world coordinates and dynamic scanpath estimation. PyNeon presents an open-source and extendable framework for analyzing mobile eye-tracking data and forms the foundation for higher-level applications.

New lab paper! 🧠 Human hippocampal & MTL theta activity is linked to eye movements, but only during memory-guided navigation. Theta is also strongest during longer, more exploratory eye movements. plos.io/4dwJhR8 Huge congrats to Humza & team! 👏

Eye movements reflect memory-related theta activity in the human brain
Theta oscillations in the medial temporal lobe support memory, but how they relate to eye and body movements during human navigation is unclear. This study shows that theta power increases during sacc...
