It's that day of the year again. tbh: It still hurts and I feel sad every time I remember what happened. The people we lost brought so much joy into many of our lives. I will always be grateful for the encouragement and kindness they showed through their works. That's how I want to remember them.

interesting Crunchyroll bug/feature: If I switch the audio in The Adventures of Mikuru Asahina Episode 00 from German to Japanese, the player switches to Melancholy part 1?! I would have preferred one of the extras they hid in the menu of the Japanese DVD sets as a easter egg. 😂

I think I need to revisit Iwakiyama-jinja next time I am in Hirosaki. Unfortunately this won't happen before spring of next year. The cover art for the new #FlyingWitch volume seems to be inspired by a place just one stop down the line from the shrine on the No. 30 bus (百沢東口).

Pleasant surprise today. After the last hot days I was running a bit low on Mugicha. So I went to a Japanese supermarket/cafe in Frankfurt to get more. A friend had a similar problem and we just happened to meet there. 😄

My last film for this year's festival was Suzuki=Bakudan (爆弾). Lots of familiar places in Tokyo get blown up. Sato Jiros performance as Suzuki was interesting.

NEW GROUP was a bit different than the previous film. The director told us before the screening "It's a strange film, don't think too hard". I'd agree the film is weird (in a good way), but the comments the movie makes about our society is definitely something we should think about. ☺️

The "you can't go wrong with a band movie" rule worked out great again. Little Live Song (小さな恋のうた) was great. The MONGOL800 Songs are so catchy, I wanted to sing along. It was nice to have Yamada Anna (Mai's actress) answer some of the audiences questions in the Q&A.

Went on to watch "A New Dawn" (花緑青が明ける日に) yesterday. The background art is stunningly beautiful and the whole movie feels like looking at a painting at the art museum. The story is good too.

Considering the movie was made to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of WW2, it feels odd that they set this movie in a fictional war instead, while also keeping all the references to the Battle of Okinawa in.

Just finished Ina Yukimitsus "Cocoon - One Summer of Girlhood -" (cocoon〜ある夏の少女たちより〜). To be honest, I don't know what to make of this movie. The animation is solid, but the story assumes a lot of knowledge on the audience side to fill in the gaps in the story.

Second film for today was Iizuka Kashos "Blue Boy Trial" (ブルーボーイ事件). If you're interested in the history of transgender rights in Japan, I highly recommend the movie. It's based on an actual trial that started in 1965.

I also watched Uchida Eijis "Night Flower" (ナイトフラワー) last night. An interesting take on "selling drugs to put food on the table". The chemistry between Natsuki, Tamae and the kids is really good. It gets a bit violent towards the end.

If you know the Shinkai version you will recognize some cuts immediately because they look almost identical. Overall I think the movie still strikes a good balance between recreating memorable scenes from the original and doing something new/different.

Instead of the childhood, adolescence and adulthood chapters from the original, the live action version is set during Takagis adulthood with flashbacks to earlier events. A lot of material was added to make it into a 2h movie. The movie works for me, even though I don't think a remake was necessary.

I was a bit too tired to comment after finishing Iwasaki Yusukes "AnyMart" (チルド) yesterday, but I liked the mix of dark humor and horror. The lesson I take away from this movie: Don't become a slave to the company rules or it will end badly.

A good start. Story wise, I'm glad the situation for single parents has improved since the 1970/80s, even though raising a kid alone still isn't exactly a walk in the park. Fujikos mother and her in-laws sure didn't hold anything back. The soundtrack was also really good.

My first movie for this year's Nippon Connection is going to be Kimura Taichis "Fujiko". I didn't book my ticket fast enough to go to the opening ceremony with a stage greeting by the director. At least the secondary screening at Eldorado has more comfy seats. ☺️

It's regretable you couldn't eat there. I like the atmosphere there a lot. If you have to change trains on your way home in Saga and have some spare time, you could try to visit their branch restaurant there instead. It's just a 5 min walk from the station.

For me it's a bit like hiking etiquette: Everything that goes up the mountain, comes down the mountain with you at the end of the trip. Similarly a good seichi junreisha in my opinion shouldn't leave things at a seichi, unless there is a dedicated place for it.

As someone who has the telephone booth from 5 Centimeters per Second on his bucket list, I can understand the appeal. Next wave of Kamakura overtourism incoming? This time it's going to be Boys Love fans. 😂

The cover of volume 3 of "If It’s You, I Might Try Falling in Love" by Kubota Maru. It shows the railroad crossing in front of Kamakura Koukou-mae station. The place is also famous among Slam Dunk fans. The combination of many fans visiting, heavy traffic in the area and nearby residential buildings caused some problems in the past.
