I much enjoyed Leonard Barden's
"mate in four" chess problem (September 12), composed by Oswald von Krobshofer in 1904. The elegant underpromotion to bishop - rather than the seemingly obvious queen promotion - is exactly the kind of subtlety that makes composed problems so enduring, the queen promotion being a red herring.
I was able to verify the solution using my own chess solver program, which I originally wrote in the C programming language in 1990, when I was working in CERN, and which still runs correctly today. It handles not only standard chess problems but also fairy chess variants including cylindrical and toroidal boards, as well as forced and assisted mates.
Curiosity then led me to look up the composer. I was delighted to discover that Krobshofer (1883-1960) was primarily a painter and graphic artist, born in Prague, who studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich from 1903 and exhibited at both the Munich and Vienna Secessions. Chess composition was apparently a sideline
- though a distinguished one.
