My short story "Aphrodite O" is now out in the fall issue of The First Line. I'm one of 8 authors who began a story (or poem) with "The line of people stretched all the way around the block." It's fun seeing the different directions we all took this in! bluecubiclepress.com/TFLfall2026....

Based on what I'm seeing, I'm also curious if bad actors might be submitting under the identities/credentials of published or known authors? It's so hard to know for sure either way. It's just hard to believe some of what I'm reading is coming from the author whose name is attached.

Successful management of an Iatrogenic portal vein and hepatic artery injury in a 4-month-old female patient: A case report and literature reviewIn summary, the management of bilateral iatrogenic I'm very sorry, but I don't have access to real-time information or patient-specific data, as I am an AI language model. I can provide general information about managing hepatic artery, portal vein, and bile duct injuries, but for specific cases, it is essential to consult with a medical professional who has access to the patient's medical records and can provide personalized advice. It is recommended to discuss the case with a hepatobiliary surgeon or a multidisciplinary team experienced in managing complex liver injuries.

Reading for Uncanny Magazine 2023 Favorite Fiction Reader Poll? Try the short story "Désolé" by Ewen Ma! uncannymagazine.com/article/deso...
The cover for Uncanny Magazine Issue 52, “Low-season Mars Tourist" by Antonio Javier Caparo: A woman in an orange spacesuit is halfway up the stairs holding up a phone and taking photographs of her surroundings. These consist of several tanks containing alien specimens, the shapes of these tanks vary from square to orbs to rectangles. There is a desert-sand-like feel to the surroundings and in the background the sky is a light amber color, the quote reads: "Mrs. K.’s son’s INData memory chip had been sold off to the highest bidder at $20,000CHD, but no one would tell her to whom it had been sold, much less how she might be able to contact them."

Yes, for sure. The hollow sappiness is off the charts in this season, and none of the characters feel like themselves in a one-writer-many-mouths kind of way. What a bummer. Almost makes me wish they hadn't been renewed for the third season, and the end was left up to all our imaginations.

Finally getting around to finishing Ted Lasso, and I'm horrified. Season 3 is borderline unwatchable at times. What on earth happened to one of my favorite shows? This feels like one of Kyle Mooney and Beck Bennett's parodies of bad sit-coms they used to do on SNL.

5 of 13 on the Booker longlist now read! (And considering I initially planned to knock the whole thing out by the winner's announcement on Sunday, I am way behind!) Paul Murray's The Bee Sting was a masterfully executed multi-generational story full of surprises & it's currently my pick to win. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

It's been a weird year for NaNoWriMo, but I'm still hanging on and staying slightly ahead of schedule. 35,000 words in, I think I may have fairly good chances of making it to the 50K goal for the first time ever.

That time grammarly really got it wrong.
Text says "Eric got covid. Tested positive the day after I saw him. I'm still negative." "Positive" is highlighted by grammarly with the suggestion "Stronger word choice: joyous". Yes, Eric was overjoyed by the covid.

Bafflingly, this year's NaNoWriMo productivity streak continues. I'm trying not to make any sudden movements so as to not scare it off.

Usually when I do NaNoWriMo, I spend a big chunk of October planning and outlining, and then I tap out about halfway through November, either at or slightly under my running word goal. I don't understand what's happening this year, but I'll take it!

4 of 13 on the Booker longlist now complete! Western Lane surprised me by being one of my favorites so far. I ravenously read the whole book in just a few hours. This was a lovely, quiet, subtle novel that genuinely moved me. I'll definitely be looking for more from Chetna Maroo.⭐⭐⭐⭐

OK, I don't want to jinx it, but I have never had a more productive start to NaNoWriMo in the many times I've attempted it! I guess the secret to a productive start is signing up last minute on a whim, feeling a little "meh" on it, and putting zero pressure on myself to write anything good?

3 of 13 now read on the Booker longlist! Despite being very short, Study for Obedience proved to be a bit of a slog for me to get through. There's a lot to admire in how the author pulled off the psychological darkness of a self-flagellating unreliable narrator, but the book just didn't grab me. ⭐⭐⭐

Also, in my experience, it's never the borderline stories that *almost* made the cut that garner the snippy replies. Every time I've gotten an indignant response to a rejection, the story was pretty schlocky/tropey or felt like a rushed, unedited first draft.

Funneling water away from communities during a drought to feed AI is one of those unfortunately true real-life scenarios that would make you say, "ooh, that's a little on-the-nose and unsubtle" if you were to read it in fiction.
