@marc-irl.bsky.social Does MCD2 take place on the same mainland as MCD, or do we head to a different one?

@marc-irl.bsky.social Sorry to ask, but is "The Rift" (MCD2 book) canon? It’s a canon prequel to MCD2, right?

@jebox.bsky.social Is there a general term for the race of Villagers/Illagers/Witches? Some general name?

@jebox.bsky.social You've said that some things, like the dragon egg's name, Nether roof, or exploding beds, are things that remain in the game because they're difficult to change or because they're iconic, not for narrative reasons. Should these things be considered part of the Minecraft universe?

@jebox.bsky.social Jeb, based on your input and input from other developers, we've written article about Minecraft lore. Could you please fact-check it for any misinformation? We would very much not like to spread misinformation using your words. minecraftlore.miraheze.org/wiki/Lore_in...

Lore in Minecraft - Minecraft Lore Wiki
To determine whether the Minecraft franchise possesses lore, one must first establish definitions for both “Minecraft” and “lore”. "Minecraft" is a media franchise...

As for the "table" with sources, Jeb seems to have called it "fairly accurate"

Based on your answers, I've put together a rough “scheme". Did I get that right? If not, could you please correct it? I realize I've been distracting you a lot lately, but still...

@jebox.bsky.social Could you please take a look at this diagram and point out any inaccuracies in it? Thank you so much in advance! I know you’re busy, and I don’t want to take up your time, but I don’t think it will take long!

@marc-irl.bsky.social Sorry for bother you again... Please tell me, if we look at Minecraft dungeons solely as a standalone story, is the vanilla player "canon" for the MCD? I know that in vanilla we create our own stories and have the freedom to choose. But in MCD, where the story is predetermined?

This excerpt from ROTAI does sound interesting given the images of the bird in the Tower in MCD. @witherking001.bsky.social preparing a review of the Tower, it will be interesting to hear what she has to say about this bird!

Thanks so much for the info, Marc! However, you probably misunderstood me because I asked the question incorrectly... Here's what I meant: The concept of Minecraft Legends is that it's a story a Villager reads to their child at night. In MCD this is not the case, these are all real events, right?

Marc, forgive me for asking you a question outside your area of expertise again. Just wanted to know: MCD, unlike Minecraft Legends, isn't some kind of tale or something? Were MCD, like MCD Arcade, like Vanilla, always conceived as parts of the universe, without any context like Villagers' tale?

@jebox.bsky.social Jeb, sorry to bother you again, but you still haven't answered my question. I understand that Minecraft only has a shared universe/mythology. But what constitutes part of that mythology/universe? Is this table accurate or not?

PwLore @pwlore.bsky.social · 21/04/2026
Yes, Marc, please forgive us if we did something wrong! We're just getting conflicting information and need to clarify... Sorry!

Doesn't the mythology team give you some kind of "Mojang answer" regarding what is and isn't part of the mythology? Could you then please tell us what you were guided by when you said "Dungeons are a canonical part of mythology"?

Sorry, but Laura De Laurence confirmed on The Withering Effect podcast that there's a "big Minecraft universe," and I just wanted to know which games are considered part of it. Not that I'm talking about any canon levels. Thanks so much for the edits! I'll create a more actual version.

It seems that in some places in ROTAI it is said that illagers and villagers have large noses. Therefore, this is their biological feature, and not just a stylization. Moreover, it seems that the difference between iron and redstone golems in the presence of their noses is not just a stylization.

PwLore @pwlore.bsky.social · 15/04/2026
Marc, could you please clarify the difference between "lore" and "mythology"? Is there a specific world in which, for example, Dungeons and ROTAI take place, or what constitutes "canon for the franchise's mythology"? I genuinely can't figure out whether Mojang actually develops lore or not.

I think that 5 years ago we loosely used "canon" and "shared universe/mythology" interchangeably. The games we design are all Minecraft and part of the mythology.

We don't really talk about "canon" or "lore". Each game is its own story. So the objective is to create consistency among different products. E.g., creepers explode, there are endermen in the End, and so on.

Hi Jeb! I have an important question. I know that Mojang has a "mythology team" that writes the mythology of the Minecraft franchise. And I know you never talk about their ideas because you love mystery. However, I wanted to ask: what the mythology team considers canon for the franchise's mythology?
