Sunrise in The Bronx.
A photograph of the sun rising over a street and under-construction train station in The Bronx. We are on an overpass looking at the sun, which has just risen. Chainlinks from the overpass gate frame the sun in the center of the photo. The sky is filled with clouds but we can see areas of blue sky. The horizon is orange from the light of the sun. On the right side of the photo an Amtrak train speeds away from us, almost as if it is heading into the rising sun.

It's sunset sky season again in New York City.
A view of the Manhattan skyline as seen from the Brooklyn Bridge. We are standing on the Brooklyn Bridge, facing north. We can see the lower Manhattan skyline in the distance, including One World Trade Center, the tall tower on the left side of the photo. Before us are the distinctive arches of the Brooklyn Bridge. Silhouettes of people that we can't clearly make out are walking along the wooden "boardwalk" of the bridge. The sky is shades of light blue and pink.

In the distance are the lights from city buildings, blurred due to shallow depth-of-field.Protestors shout anti-ICE slogans as they march up 6th avenue. They are purposely out of focus. In focus behind them is One World Trade Center, lit up as night begins to fall on the city.A crowd of protestors hold varying signs saying things like "RESIST" and "ABOLISH ICE". In the distance we can see the silhouette of a church and One World Trade Center against an evening sunset sky.A young woman in a black baseball cap holds up a hand-crafted sign saying "FREE BALLS! We do not see her face as the photo is taken from behind her.A photo of the crowd of protestors shows people holding signs stating that "Trump and Noem are accessories to murder", and a banner that says "ICE MUST GO!" We can see some of the faces of the crowd, a mixture of people of all ages chanting.A variety of protestors hold both hand-crafted and mass-printed signs. Some protestors are masked, some are not. The protestors are of all ages and ethnicities. An organizer of the anti-ICE protest stands in front of the large crowd and speaks into the microphone of a megaphone, while another organizer holds the megaphone high and pointed towards the sky so the crowd can hear. We cannot see the faces of the organizers as they are photographed from behind, but the person holding the megaphone is a young blonde woman, and the speaker is a young man with long dark hair. We can't clearly make out the faces of the crowd due to shallow depth-of-field.

The sky is still a bit blue with a pinkish purple on the horizon. In the foreground of the photo we can see the Vanderbilt Avenue entrance to Grand Central Terminal. Springtime in Central Park.
A photograph of Central Park South on a warm, sunny spring day in April. We are in Central Park, facing south. We can see sunbathers on the grass on blankets. The sunbathers are mostly young couples in the foreground of the photo, but we can make out groups of friends and families in the distance. All of them are facing away from us. There is a rock formation towards the center of the photo that people are walking on. Trees line the horizon. Some trees have their spring leaves while other trees are still mostly barren branches. Far in the distance we can see the buildings of the so-called "Billionaire's Row" — several luxury skyscrapers which are tall enough and close enough together to form an intermediate skyline.

Stormy skies over the city.
A view of Lower Manhattan as seen from Queens. We are in Queens on Skillman Avenue, heading back to Manhattan. Ahead of us are parked cars and a bike lane. In the distance we can see the buildings that make up part of Lower Manhattan's skyline. They are lit up because the sun is setting. Above the buildings are dramatic, dark storm clouds from a storm that has just passed through Queens. The clouds are breaking up enough to reveal the yellow, pink, purple and blue colors of the sunset.

A night photo of the view from the Manhattan Bridge. We are back on on the pedestrian path of the Manhattan Bridge. Looking across the water of the East River, we can see One World Trade Center, the tallest building with the spire, lit up in the center-right of the photo. Other, less-impressive buildings surround it, forming a unique portion of the New York City skyline that can only be seen from Brooklyn. On the left side of the photo we can make out the angular lights of the Brooklyn Bridge.

Christmas in New York.
A photograph of the Washington Square Park Arch and the Washington Square Park Christmas Tree. We are in the middle of the street facing south, looking at the Washington Square Park Arch. In the center of the arch is the Christmas Tree. It's kind of a skinny tree and lit up with yellowish lights that do not change color, but it's still a nice tree. The sun has just set and if we look past the tree we can see the tail-end of an NYPD police car, and looking even further we make out the upper part of One World Trade Center with its distinctive spire. In the foreground of the photo, a woman in a blue jacket and black pants walks across the street in the crosswalk. Various other people are positioned around the base of the Arch: from left to right, a young man with a bicycle checks his phone, a group of young people in winter clothing pose and take photos beneath the tree, and a woman is using her phone to take pictures of the sculptural details of the Arch.

'Tis the season for rooftop drinking.
We are outside at a rooftop bar during the last week of November in New York City. It's cold outside, but that's not going to stop tourists and New Yorkers from getting drunk on a rooftop. The rooftop is packed, but we can only see about five or six people in front of us, sitting and drinking on the bottom edge of the photo. They are bundled up in winter hats and coats, including a young woman in a white winter coat, scarf and a thick white winter hat. She is seated next to a hatless man wearing glasses. Due to overexposure in the highlights of the photo, we can't clearly make out any of their faces. Behind them is a fence, and on the fence are large light-up snowflakes. Rising above them is the Empire State Building, which dominates the center of the photo. It seems to glow against a cloudy night sky. There are other buildings around it, but they look tiny in comparison because they are even further in the distance.

Autumn is still pretty.
A photograph of autumn leaves with the sun rising behind them. We are in The Bronx, NYC, but we could be anywhere. We see a few red autumn leaves leaves dangling from tree branches. In the distance and out of focus due to shallow depth-of-field, we can see the rising sun on the horizon. The sun has turned the horizon a beautiful golden color, but the sky above it is blue. The light from the sun shines through the leaves, letting us clearly see details on them such as veins and spots.

An evening on the Brooklyn Bridge.
A photograph taken on the Brooklyn Bridge of the Manhattan skyline just after the sun has gone down. We are on the Brooklyn Bridge, facing away from Brooklyn and looking towards Manhattan. The sun has set, and the horizon has turned orange with hints of pink. We can see lower Manhattan and its distinctive skyline, dominated by One World Trade Center (the tower with the antenna). On the right side of the photo we can see the pedestrian walkway. There are people walking along the walkway but we can't see them clearly as the shadows are strong from the lack of light. We see the arches of the Brooklyn Bridge above the walkway, but a distinctive lamp is what we notice first. Below us is the lower level of the bridge, which is exclusively for cars. We can barely make out a few headlights of cars that are heading away from Manhattan and into Brooklyn.

The Bronx has the strongest, most powerful sunsets.
A photograph of the sunset as seen from The Bronx. We are on the Third Avenue Bridge, which connects The South Bronx to Manhattan. Of course, we are on The Bronx side of the bridge, looking west at the setting sun. What we see in the distance on the horizon are the buildings of Harlem, across The Harlem River. We can't really make out any details of any buildings, but they line the horizon in various shapes and sizes. As the sun sets the sky has turned tones of gold and purple, with an ominous storm cloud on the right side of the photo.

Sunset at the Central Park Reservoir.
A photo looking across the Central Park Reservoir. We are standing on the east side of the Reservoir looking west across the water. There are wispy clouds against a blue sky. The horizon is fiery orange and yellow; the sun has just set behind a row of buildings on Central Park West which are almost silhouetted by the fading light. Most of the buildings are indistinct, but we can see the famous El Dorado Apartments (the two towers) on the right-hand side of the photo.

Real New Yorkers simply call it the Central Park Reservoir, but officially it’s called The Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir. The Reservoir stretches from 86th to 96th street, and from 5th avenue to Central Park West. The Reservoir was decommissioned in 1993 and no longer actually supplies water to the city. It is preserved as a landmark by the city.

Sunset at Hudson Yards in New York City.
We are standing on the top of The Vessel, a structure on the West Side of Manhattan at Hudson Yards in New York City. We're standing on the easternmost top platform.

We are facing west looking towards a dramatic purple and red sky as the sun has just set over New Jersey, across the river. We see the silhouettes of about 20 people watching and photographing the sunset on the opposite westernmost top platform. Far below them we can make out the train tracks of the Hudson Rail Yard.

New Yorkers and people who keep up with the news will know that this is an older photo, taken just before The Vessel was temporarily closed for a few seasons. The structure was closed due to several suicides. People would visit and jump off of the very top of The Vessel, since due to its unfortunate design, the railings are very low and easy to climb over. The railings are about chest high for an average adult, something that you may be able to discern from this photo. In total, four people committed suicide at The Vessel before it was temporarily closed to the public.

This year, The Vessel is open again, but no one is allowed on the top of it anymore; visitors can only enter the lower levels of the structure. The people in this photo are among the last people who will ever have this particular experience.

One World Trade Center as seen from the Empire State Building.
A photo of One World Trade Center as seen through a window in the Empire State Building. We are inside the Empire State Building on the 80th floor. We are standing behind two tourists, looking over their shoulders as they gaze at the horizon through the window. In the center we see One World Trade center set against a cloudy evening sky. The lights have come on for various buildings below. On the right we can make out Ellis Island and a tiny Statue of Liberty. There is some distortion to the photo since it was taken through glass; of course the windows on the 80th floor of the Empire State Building are always closed. The Observation Deck on the 86th floor, which allows you to stand outside, provides clearer views.

A photograph of the Manhattan Bridge and Brooklyn Bridge in the evening, beneath a bright moon. We are in Manhattan standing beneath the FDR Drive, facing south. We are looking across the water towards Brooklyn. We are practically centered in between the two bridges. To our left is the Manhattan Bridge. To the right, the Brooklyn Bridge. The lights of both bridges are lit up, it looks like they are lined with tiny bright dots. In the middle of the photo is the moon, overexposed to the point that it looks like a bright light in the sky. Beneath the moon on the water we can make out a yacht, traveling fast enough to create a wake. The sun has recently set, giving the sky a purplish hue on the horizon.
