I keep thanking the gardeners who had my allotment before me, for planting grape vines. The only thing that was happy during this extreme summer and they keep giving me a great harvest.

The garden is somewhat recovered from the extreme drought we had this summer and is gifting flowers to me.

Good for you! I've just started piano lessons I don't really have time for. But still, it's an interesting process to learn from scratch!

Interesting observation! I've just attended and hosted a niche material science / solar conference and was pleasantly surprised how little AI generated material there was. A few illustrations here and there, but not a lot.

It is very exciting that we get to host the #perovskite evaporation community in Freiburg! The Vacuum Deposited Perovskite Conference is in full swing. We are loving the focused scientific discussion it has already sparked! vacuumdepositedperovskite.org

My account name and profile promise science, but these days I mostly post about gardening and train trips. On the other place, I used to have a separate account for my research group and I liked that separation. So I will try doing that again. Welcome to the Sky: @jborchertlab.bsky.social !

The 'logic' only makes sense once you consider that some of them are oil and gas lobbyists. These measures are not meant to be in the best interest of the people.

This purple bean does look great in the garden and is easy to pick as it is easy to find between the foliage. But it does not keep the purple colour when cooked.

A very garden heavy dinner tonight. Courgette, beans, and purslane pesto all from my allotment. I am delighted that I have anything to harvest after a late start to the garden year and a record drought / heatwave.
A plate, on it: half a courgette, topped with melted cheese, a bunch of green beans, and a swirl of spaghetti

I do like to grow unusual varieties so that my garden veg does not look like it came from the supermarket. In this case the climbing French Bean "Blauhilde". This blue Hilda was the first of this year's varieties to be ready.

Good guess! It's the other way around. Left is an unripe squash called 'Blue Banana' right is a white zucchini of variety 'White Bush'

Spent a couple of hours in the garden today pottering around, weeding, and even harvesting a bit. One of my most prolific weeds is common purslane, which is edible. So weeding and harvest are the same thing. Cleared half a bed to sow kale, got 1.5kg of purslane.

Bit of an experimental batch with wintery spices. Let's see if this makes a decent punch.

I am a bit hesitant to put the stems in. But it would be easier to pick the few bad grapes out rather than picking all the good ones off. 🤔 Might try for the next batch.

Interesting! I did a first small test batch a couple of days ago and liked the flavour. So this batch is the same. But I do intend to play with it a bit for variety. Was thinking of a Christmas flavour combo with cinnamon, cloves, anise etc.

The squash and courgettes are also amongst the survivors of the record dry summer. Can you tell which is the courgette and which is the squash?

My kitchen scale could not cope with their weight so will have to weigh them in batches later. This is also not the first time I have harvested some. Already over 7kg this year. Plus today's at least 6++kg and there are more still on the vines.

I took over an allotment in June. Turns out right before a historic drought and heatwaves, is a bad time to start a garden. The last 3 months have been absurd. Very grateful to the previous allotmenteers who planted grapes. Only plant that was remotely happy this summer! Picked 'a few' grapes today.

The information I provided was condensed well by the journalists and editors. What I had not quite anticipated was that they included a couple of lines about me as a person, commenting for example on the mini model of a #perovskite crystal structure I was wearing as a necklace.

I am deeply impressed with the level of investigation the journalists put into this piece, covering many areas of photovoltaics, interviewing many people, in multiple locations. In Freiburg I got to give a guided tour of our new Pero-Si-SCALE platform, pictures of which made it into the article.

I agree and I don't think there are many jokes about Polish people in Germany. There are a few about the Dutch and the group most made fun of are 'East Frisians' but those jokes are also out of fashion these days.

Not necessarily. We had a guy who emailed many many people in my previous physics department multiple times about some fundamental theory being wrong and the Novel Prize falsely given out etc. He initially only emailed the men. I guess the women were not seen as relevant enough to bother contacting

Delighted to see our latest research out in the world. We continue to optimise methods to make perovskite-silicon tandem solar cells. With our collaborators we were able to gain deep insights into the processes that happen during film formation. This knowledge is important to scale this technology.
