maybe, but it's an ironic time to make that point when the OP of this thread is disinformation which is being widely picked up and spread without verification

you may have a point, but is this anecdote actually credible? looking it up, it seems like there were not that many letters and I'm not seeing any evidence they weren't jokes. fictional tv shows weren't new even then and there wasn't an epidemic of functioning adults unable to grasp the concept

even outside of explicit rng stats, game design necessarily entails making constant compromises that the possibility of a rare negative outcome exists. you can't avoid it. also, if a player realizes the game is lying to them about stats, even if it's in their favor, there are costs to this as well

“If you take it down, they’re not gonna learn anything. People who love him will still love him. People who hate him will still hate him,” he said. oh yeah, as opposed to when it was up and people were completely changing their minds about the guy every time they passed it by

I think there are many medical and social advancements made since then which could at least share the credit with vaccines. the advent of NICUs in the 60s, awareness that pregnant mothers shouldn't smoke or drink, and baby formula regulation, for example

well, it's pretty easy to test this theory. we're doing it right now, aren't we? we have a heavily carceral system currently, and so far the way it has handled trump is that the threat of it made him run for president again. that's what we've got out of the current system wrt him

a lot of people use "wholesome" as just an indirect way to position whatever it is contrasted with as degenerate

most modern game soundtracks are too afraid of melodies. they don't want good, memorable music to "distract" from the game. the development of music making technology also introduced the ability to create music with softness and subtlety that doesn't "rely" on melody to fulfill its purpose

yeah I can see you don't personally believe it, but I don't think the people making the argument tend to really believe it either. it very clearly doesn't hold up and no one would tolerate such a flimsy, double standard, ad hoc justification for criminalizing their own victimless behavior
000
postin' seller's finest postin's @puzzlemathstar.bsky.social · 01/08/2026
even with gambling, I'd argue a gambler is not victimizing themselves. gambling addicts are not known to bet on coin flips and light their own money on fire if they lose. someone is knowingly exploiting their psychological weakness and potentially ruining their life for money

this is very different from a lucid agreement between the entirety of the only parties involved in sex work, both of which remain in control of and responsible for their actions, despite its debatable proximity to harm, which itself is largely due to its criminalization

to the point you might justify taking it. drunk driving fails that responsibility and directly creates a condition of stochastic manslaughter. it's like loosing a big, feral dog out onto the streets. not merely related to harm, but a direct responsibility for it, like most crimes

postin' seller's finest postin's @puzzlemathstar.bsky.social · 01/08/2026
better than most of the arguments which actually get used, but I don't think the mere "closeness" of drunk driving to the damage caused is what justifies criminalization. driving at all is a huge risk to incidental third parties which requires competence and responsibility to diminish that risk-

if we imagine that all the moral ideas worth caring about have always been around, then that suggests there's no need to look further now than what's immediately obvious
020
postin' seller's finest postin's @puzzlemathstar.bsky.social · 29/07/2026
surely dissatisfaction isn't new, but I think it's important to recognize the reality of ontological moral ignorance where it did exist in order to understand that our own modern thinking is probably just as limited without putting serious work into thinking outside the box

prob wouldn't want a personality, but if it had one, and I used it often enough that it was conducive to talk to it like a person, I would want it to act like one in terms of moral weight for virtue ethics reasons. wouldn't want to train myself to be callous to people with assurance it didn't matter
