Never in my wildest dreams would I have expected South Park to be at the forefront of our fight to save democracy.

Yes, I think moved from AZ to Idaho. The mom is in Arizona, dad moved to a farm in Priest River, Idaho. Grandfather Dale Roley's FB page is awfully interesting as well. Sad situation

There are a lot of skateboarding pics on his dad's Instagram, among other interesting imagery. I'm sure it's a complex picture. Curious if we will ever know the specific motive

They told Minnesotans to stay home. After the murder of Speaker Hortman and her husband—and the failed attempts on Senator Hoffman and his wife—fear was the official message. But the people came anyway. In defiance. In grief. In purpose. This was the #NoKings rally in MN. #BlueSky #MedSky #NewsSky

I have to be honest — I’m uncertain how to fact-check crowd size. But I want this to be true. 🤣 Apparently that’s sufficient in 2025 so let’s go with it for now

They're called public records for a reason. Starting today, WIRED will *stop paywalling* articles that are primarily based on public records obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, becoming the first publication to partner with @freedom.press to offer this for our new coverage.

Wired is dropping paywalls for FOIA-based reporting. Others should follow
As the administration does its best to hide public records from the public, Wired magazine is stepping up to help stem the secrecy

"...a democracy is not safe if the people tolerate the growth of private power to a point where it becomes stronger than their democratic state itself. That, in its essence, is fascism — ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power." FDR 1938

We shall have to agree to disagree on Jesse Singal's hit piece being "right." It isn't. It's cherry picked nonsense, mostly aimed at opinion pieces. And yes, motives matter. As do the consequences. Don't boost or excuse trolling / bullying. johnhorgan.org/cross-check/...

Dismayed to see @laurahelmuth.bsky.social being predictably & viciously attacked online. Greatly appreciated this commentary by John Horgan. "Science journalists can either challenge abuses of science or look the other way." Helmuth challenged them. To her credit. johnhorgan.org/cross-check/...

People aren't actually going after her like they are because of her editing skills. They are going after her b/c she's "too woke." That is abundantly clear in the tone and content of the vast majority of the criticism.

She (the editor) also broke with tradition to endorse Harris, which gained her a lot of enemies. But again, if you read the actual piece --- her pro-science argument is based on Trump's anti-science agenda, cuts to research funding, climate science denial, etc.

GL Pennington @purposefulprof.bsky.social · 20/11/2024
Thanks for your reply. I think we need to be cautious about picking up opinion pieces & accepting them as fact simply b/c certain points resonate with us. This author has a track record of cherry picking to support his own ideology & trying to discredit any science that he deems too "woke" / trans

GL Pennington @purposefulprof.bsky.social · 20/11/2024
Respecfully disagree. It's a quite biased critique in its own right. Some of the attacks are uncalled for. I suggest people read the original work. Cherry-picked examples from OPINION pieces in the magazine, for example. And misrepresentations of others.
010
GL Pennington @purposefulprof.bsky.social · 20/11/2024
okay. so let's critique her editing skills. not attack her as the "woman who brought down science by being too woke." hit pieces like this led the author of the original article to be showered with threats and hate mail. the vitriol and hyperbole is unnecessary & harmful.

"Default humans" is a turn of phrase - used here to point out the very objectively true finding that white male bodies were long treated as the "standard" research subject. Hence, drug dev't, dosing, etc. was based on men's metabolism & body composition. Distinct symptom patterns missed, etc.

Again, CONTEXT matters. Her point is sufficiently clear in the content of the full paragraph. Your inability to comprehend the context doesn't mean she "doesn't understand math." Pretty sure she does. The language is also referencing a paper she co-wrote on the Black maternal health crisis.
