Historic Lib Dem voter who is apparently now hard left without changing my views (I now vote Green). Cat lover. Passionate about justice and the rule of law.

Logical that criminal damage like the IRA bombing campaign would count as terrorism. But ludicrous to claim that private criminal damage that nobody has even heard of can terrorise the civilian population.

We've already seen that happening for real in the US.

That's not people on the left. You can't be "on the left" while espousing an explicitly right wing economic position like that. What you can be, and many are, is a right winger who has infiltrated our purportedly left wing party that is now firmly on the right of the political spectrum.

Only the Greens, as far as I am aware. Very telling that he is willing to praise Badenoch but the Greens are beyond the pale for him. Tells you exactly where the parameters of acceptable thought are in our political class.

Let's make no mistake about this. The terrorism laws specify criminal damage in order to capture things like the IRA bombing campaign, which did serious damage to infrastructure to terrify the population. Criminal damage that the general public had never heard of cannot be terrorism.

"Burglars" would be a more accurate description. Jail time straight off would be the normal sentence for burgling someone's home.

That's why the motion defined exactly what it meant by the term. The critics have in effect been saying, "I object to this motion because something it explicitly excludes from its terms is not racism." It is clearly deliberate dishonesty rather than simple lack of comprehension.

The irony is that it is the Zionists' assertion that criticising Zionism is anti-Semitic that is the actual anti-Semitic position. It equates all Jews with support for genocide.

Yes, I remember the fall-out from that. But here's the thing. For all that the right and the media went to town on it, it didn't do them any good. I think it resonated with the public even as the beneficiaries of that luck desperately tried to deny luck had anything to do with it.

The other side of that, of course, is that making and keeping wealth depends on public spending. On health, on education, on justice and the rule of law, on defence, on public transport... as Obama said, "you didn't build that".

I like that phrase "wealth is luck". It sums it up beautifully. I'm comfortably off, and I have never forgotten how lucky I have been to be born in the UK, to a stable and comfortably off family, to have got a good education, to have had many decades of good health and no major accidents... 🍀🍀🍀

Because our Government is not supplying and supporting those killing Ukrainians. Do give up with this argument. It is the height of sophistry and marks you out as either stupid enough to think it is a real point or evil enough to think it distracts from genocide.

What utter garbage. Starmer got the easiest ride of any Labour leader since Blair. It's not the media's fault that he chose to drive away almost everyone who reluctantly voted for him, to the point that he delivered one of Labour's worst ever local election results.

The replacement of Starmer with Burnham was always going to lead to a temporary boost for Labour and a fall back for the Greens. It won't last once people realise how much of what they hated about Starmer is being continued by Burnham, but they aren't there yet.

And there was never much chance of a by-election win. The media has made quite sure the Burnham bubble has remained fully inflated. Give it 18 months and Labour will be polling back in the teens as more people see that there was no doubt to give them the benefit of.

I'm not sure you get how dangerous that would be. For people like you who are happy being culpable in a genocide, you already have pretty much every other party in England to choose from.

If they reverse this, not only will they lose thousands of members and supporters, and go back to being as relevant as they were under Chowns and Ramsay, they will also prove the impossibility of changing anything for the better via mainstream politics at all.

It's pretty obvious really. Burnham is enjoying a honeymoon. What he says is popular. Many people haven't cottoned on to what he's not saying, or the gap between what he IS saying and what they THINK he is saying. When they do, Labour will start to fall in the polls again and the Greens will rise.

Hmm. So you have changed your entire outlook not because you disagree with the substance of what has happened but because you disagree with the way it has been done. Labour and the extreme centrists absolutely love people like you.

And she is going to “reform the welfare system around the principle that everyone who can work should work”, as if that hadn’t been the fundamental principle of the entire benefits system for the past 40 years. What’s not to like?!

Purple Electric @purpleelectric.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
Didn't listen, but have read a detailed report on it. It seems she is going to spend a fortune on prisons and war while cutting taxes. She’s going to increase growth through more austerity and the destruction of the environment.

I find it hard to take seriously people who would forgive Labour all manner of utterly foul hard right racist & abusive policies, but would ditch the Greens for simply making the choice to call out genocide as genocide "in the wrong way". Almost as if they were never considering voting Green at all.

Yeah. It is impossible. You have already hit the full capacity of 650 seats without taking account of the Lib Dems, PC, SNP or the Irish parties. No way was Labour EVER going to do any sort of deal with the Greens. In anything close to the scenario you describe, they'd govern as a minority.

The Greens’ critics are literally arguing that condemning an ideology that calls for ethnic cleansing of Palestinians is anti-Semitic. There is no rational debate to be had with people who are willing to deploy such dishonest and disingenuous arguments in support of mass murder.

That would undoubtedly have left us in a better position than we are right at this moment. Unfortunately we have to deal with where we are, not where we would have liked to be.

You can add the justice system to that list. Chronic underfunding means delays in hearings until 2029-30 are now commonplace in criminal, family, civil and tribunal cases. Whatever rights Parliament has theoretically given you, good luck actually trying to enforce and defend them.

That's why I find myself torn on this. The reaction was inevitable, but how are we ever going to deal with this unless we stand up to it? Corbyn just caved, and look where that got him. They crucified him for it anyway.

If you can't tell the difference between hating people because they are Jewish, and hating people because they are conducting mass murder, there is no hope for you.

I'm not holding out too much hope. The media has done an effective job of inflating the Burnham bubble in the short term. I suspect by the time of next year's local elections, things will be getting rocky for them, but not down to the levels of Starmer this year. Give it another year and it will.
