Tukkijoki sumassa

Kalajoella tullut näytelmäidea työnsi syrjään tekeillä olleen romaanin Pieni elämäntarina (1902). Syksyllä 1898 Tukkijoella-käsikirjoitus oli valmis otettavaksi Suomalaisen teatterin 37. näytäntökauden ohjelmistoon. Näytelmä osoittautui kuitenkin dramaturgi Jalmari Finnen mukaan niin heikoksi, että harjoitukset lopetettiin alkuunsa. Pakkala yritti muokata näytelmää uusiksi, mutta laihoin tuloksin. Hän kirjoittikin masentuneena Larin-Kyöstille kyllästyneensä koko touhuun ja päättäneensä panna sen "toistaiseksi pöydälle tai oikeammin pöydän alle. Se ei tyydytä - paska!" Suutari pysyköön lestissään, kirjailija huokasi kitkerästi.

Näytelmä kertoo tukkilaisista, jotka uittotöissään saapuvat pienelle paikkakunnalle. Myöhemmin rikkaaksi talollisen pojaksi paljastuva Turkka on työnjohtaja, hänen reippaana adjutanttinaan Huotari. Pietola-niminen talonpoika inhoaa tukkilaisia, mutta hänen tyttärensä Katri rakastuu Turkkaan, mökintyttö Anni Huotariin ja renki-tukkilainen Tolari kaupustelija-Maijaan. Koomisia hahmoja ovat juoruakat ja Rättärin hengenheimolaiset Poro-Pirkko ja Pahna-Maija sekä "lyhytjärkinen poika" Pölhö-Kustaa.

Pietola on velkaantunut Rättärille, eräänlaiselle oikeusapumiehelle, joka havittelee myös Katria. Väärinkäsitysten ja kommellusten kautta Rättäri osoitetaan lopulta roistoksi ja kaikki rakastavaiset saavat toisensa ja Pölhö-Kustaa pääsee Pietolan holhotiksi.

Bergbom alkaa ohjata

Bergbom tarttui näytelmään uudelleen syksyllä 1899. Hän teki käsikirjoitukseen muutoksia ja vaati mukaan lauluja. Larin-Kyösti, Otto Manninen ja Kaarlo Halme kirjoittivat laulujen sanat, jotka Oskar Merikanto sävelsi. Finne kertoo, että koko hankkeella oli selkeä tilapääluonne: "Tuli tuulan, tuli tuli tei sävellettiin vanhan Arkadian ravintolassa savukelaatikon kanteen parin tuutingin välillä". Tilannesidonnaisuutta kuvaa hyvin myös se, että koska päähenkilöä Turkkaa näyttelevä Kaarle Halme ei osannut laulaa, hänelle ei lauluja kirjoitettu, vaan parhaat menivät Huotaria esittävälle "sulavasointuiselle tenorille" Aleksis Rautiolle.

Käsikirjoitukseen tehtiin muutoksia viimeiseen asti. Finne kertoo harvoin nähneensä Bergbomia niin kärsimättömänä kuin Tukkijoen aikana. Erityisesti teatterinjohtajaa kiusasi kysymys Pölhö-Kustaan kengästä. Matilda v. Troil, myöhemmin teatterin apulaisjohtaja kertoi Finnelle toivovansa, että pääsisi kenkämysteeristä selville ennen kuolemaansa, mutta hänen toiveensa ei toteutunut.

Sekä Bergbom että Finne eivät uskoneet näytelmän menevän viittä kertaa enempää. Teatterimiesten ällistys olikin suuri, kun Tukkijoella pyöri täydelle salille 43 kertaa ensimmäisen näyttämökauden aikana. "Niin vähän voi Kaarlo Bergbomin kaltainen parhainkaan ja yleisön makua tunteva johtaja aavistaa, mikä lopulta vaikuttaa yleisöön", siunaili Finne. Pakkala kirjoitti tyytyväisenä Otto Manniselle 13.10. 1899 ensi-illan tunnelmista: "Hillitty premiääriyleisökään ei voinut hillitä itseään, vaan joutui tietämättään äänekkääseen nauruun illan kuluessa".

read the play Tukkijoella by Teuvo Pakkala (whose work i've previously enjoyed; Vaaralla is a banger) and thought it was pretty bad, convoluted and unfunny. went to look for more context and apparently it ruined his reputation bc it became an insane hit with audiences but critics hated it 😭

ultimately i think i all comes from the cultural shift of how nerd stuff went from stigmatized to mainstream as Hollywood started to lean more explicitly on marketing & catering to fans. your social capital used to come from "what i like is niche", now it comes from "what i like is popular"

the fact that the default is to hide every post (inaccurately detected to be) not in the user's (presumed) primary language is insane; so many wild assumptions in play like 1) people probably only speak the language their OS is set to 2) seeing a post in a language you don't speak is Bad
