Mayor Lurie renews commitment to homegrown mass surveillance company Flock Safety
The expansion of mass surveillance is a key plank in the agenda of Mayor Lurie and his ‘moderate’ coalition. The contract isn't up for renewal until next year, but the timing of the Mayor's policy…

"In Lurie, the nation’s elites think they may have found the answer. ‘The foil to the rising socialists might be found in a red state with conservative values. But perhaps he’s a Democrat in San Francisco Read the whole story puml.media/a-lifelong-r...

Now Lurie has demonstrated that you're never too young have your privilege accentuated by City Hall, and that he is committed to a future in which the well-off continue to be disproportionately represented in San Francisco's halls of power.

Lurie's Youth Commission appointments are consistent with his policies for grown-ups, which typically prioritize those least in need.

Only three members of the current Board of Supervisors attended SFUSD, and key Mayoral allies Board President Rafael Mandelman and Stephen Sherrill are both prep school alumni like the Mayor.

While that spread isn't representative of San Francisco, where 70 percent of school aged children attend public schools, it is very representative of City Hall. Lurie went to elite private schools.

Last week, Mission Local's Yujie Zhou broke the story that Daniel Lurie had appointed 6 private school children to the Youth Commission, and none who attend public school, resulting in a Youth Commission where only 6 of 17 total commissioners attend public school.

San Francisco's Board of Supervisors is required to incorporate input from the City's Youth Commission whenever it considers legislation that affects young people and the Commission has been instrumental in the success of policies like the closing of Juvenile Hall and Free Muni for Youth.

It's clear why Daniel Lurie and his billionaire allies would prefer to live in that future, but ordinary working San Franciscans need to send them a clear message that they are DEF-initely not going to vote away their democratic power.

The passage of Prop D would inaugurate a new politics in San Francisco, one in which grassroots efforts to do things like raise the minimum wage, tax billionaires, protect renters, and build affordable housing would never see the light of day.

Lurie's charter amendment would mean that only measures backed by big money interests would ever make it to the ballot, measures like Propositions D,E, and F, which have raised and spent millions of dollars to reach voters in November.

Historically, San Francisco's citizen initiatives have been a means to enact policies that benefit the working class even when, as now, working class San Francisco is not well-represented in City Hall.

PUML @puml.media · 30/09/2026
Proposition D is the most egregious of these. It raises the threshhold for signatures and Board of Supervisor votes necessary to place a measure before voters at the ballot box.
100
PUML @puml.media · 30/09/2026
In reality, his trio of ballot measures this November -- Propositions D, E and F -- would consolidate power in the Mayor's Office and further enhance the political power of the ultrawealthy.

Here in San Francisco, our first billionaire mayor is mounting a more covert attack on the free exercise of democracy, but one whose consequences could endure for generations. Mayor Daniel Lurie's anti-democracy program is being marketed as "charter reform" to "clean up City Hall."

Most people are old enough to remember January 6th, 2021, even though the consequences for that insurrection were short-lived. Trump continues to introduce innovative new ways to reduce the voting power of people who don't support him and enhance it for those who do.

America's first billionaire President has been blatant in his attempts to retain his grip on power by rigging the electoral system in his favor.

Brooke Jenkins captured the idea well a few years ago when she said the homeless "have to be made uncomfortable." This approach hasn't achieved its desired outcomes yet but City Hall seems hopeful that causing more discomfort will do the trick.

Removing services dedicated to keeping people alive and replacing them with expensive, temporary, enforced sobriety won't solve any of the city's problems but it will surely cause many people to suffer more than they otherwise would. And maybe that's the point.

The RESET Center is run jointly by San Francisco's Sheriff and Public Health Departments and a venture-funded company from Arizona called Connections Health Solutions, which provides the operations layer for a cool half a million taxpayer dollars every month.

Lurie's 6th St. ambitions are anchored by the recently opened flagship RESET Center nearby, a forced substance-withdrawal detention center where as many as 25 people at a time who've been arrested for public drug use involuntarily detox for up to 24 hours and then released back onto 6th St.

While that may be true of his rhetoric, he remains resolutely on the side of his ultrawealthy peers, using the power of his office and platform to the benefit those making a killing off the city's housing crisis.

A recent glowing profile of Lurie in the Washington Post notes that "[t]here is nothing us-versus-them about Lurie's rhetoric."

The truth is that Lurie opposes Prop I because it would block his efforts to give corporate landlords like Blackstone and Donald Trump a tax break.

PUML @puml.media · 24/09/2026
Most egregiously, the Mayor opposed Proposition I, a measure that uses money from an existing tax on the sale of high-end real estate to build affordable housing and provide rent relief and eviction defense -- the very things Lurie claimed to support just 24 hours earlier.

PUML @puml.media · 24/09/2026
The very next day, Lurie released his endorsements for the upcoming November elections. And what a difference a day makes! Lurie's endorsements map identical to those of the conservative PAC GrowSF and there isn't a billionaire-backed candidate or ballot measure the Mayor doesn't support.

Such closures and reductions are likely to pile up now that the Mayor has pledged to review every City contract with nonprofit providers of services to homeless people, "with a focus on outcomes and accountability."

What Jenkins is saying openly is that she thinks San Francisco should be keeping more people in jail for longer periods of time, before they've been convicted of a crime, and she regrets that the state Supreme Court has made it harder for prosecutors to prove that is necessary.
