Since I’m now* using the desk in the undercroft beyond reach of wifi I wanted some way to close off the narrow barn windows after dark. We decided on shutters set back into the reveals as the least intrusive solution. The prototype is taking shape. —————— *not this minute, obv
A piece of pine set back on the sill of a narrow barn window, shaped to fit the angled reveal.A pine frame with chunky uprights and vertical loose stops (like on a doorframe) shaped (by spousal unit at great personal cost) to fit into the narrow window reveal. It’s set back from the glazed unit by a couple of inches where the reveal is wider so it only blocks minimal daylight.

30 years today since my mum died, so did a sort of pilgrimage to her grave. Have basically spent the day thinking ‘Well, shit, 30 years is a long time.’ Got back and the aurora app pinged, so went out to check the cloud cover. And, well shit. Thanks, cosmos.
View of partially clear sky to the north with grey cloud across the top left corner and clump of sycamores silhouetted below (looking like a single large tree). Along the horizon is a dense band of cloud. Between them is clear sky with pinkish/purple aurora and a hint of pale green at the bottom right. More pink/purple sky to the north east above band of clouds along horizon with a few wisps of cloud detached from it against a paler green band of sky.

Everything’s up and running. Have found a spare HDMI cable, connected the big monitor, identified the right drivers for each keyboard, made a note of which which switch puts the ergonomic mouse in USB dongle mode, and tested everything while the cat checked for dodgy connections and cobwebs.
L-shaped desk with laptop on stand next to external monitor. A floofy cat’s tail is protruding from behind the monitor. An ergonomic keyboard and mouse are set up on the desk, along with post-its, a mug of hot water, and a bluetooth speaker used to ascertain that the laptop’s Bluetooth does work as you’d hope, just not with the. The monitors show several blurry Obsidian windows open with draft, notes and mind maps for the WIP. There’s a rough sketch map propped up by the wall, but it’s not entirely accurate. There are various books on shelves beneath the desk, mostly research material.

It's Book Quote Wednesday and today's #BookQW word is 'push'. In The Waterborne Blade, Alwenna's woken from a familiar nightmare.
Extract from The Waterborne Blade by Susan Murray:

Alwenna woke to stillness. The crumbling, falling nightmare had ended. The same old nightmare, yet still so vivid, so real. The imagined weight of her father’s broken body pressed down on her legs. She could almost taste the loosened earth, the grit in her mouth, the dust caking her lips. Her eyes stung with grit when she opened them and tears streamed unbidden.

Dust? Grit?

She raised her hand to rub her eyelids, but something hampered the movement. She jerked her arm reflexively and freed it. Her action set something in motion with a tiny skirling hush that stilled after a moment or two. What? It sounded like pebbles. Or sand. The smell of mouldering plaster rose up around her. She blinked, looking for the chink between her bed curtains where moonlight or firelight always shone, but the night was too dark. Disorientated, she tried to push herself up into a sitting position, only to find one foot was pinned by tangled bedcovers. Impatiently she tugged it and pain ripped through her ankle. She yelped out loud and subsided. More cautiously she explored the darkness with her free hand. She was covered not by woollen blankets, but by a blanket of grit and small stones, crumbled plaster and mortar. This was not her old nightmare. Not now. It had propelled her into a new, waking one.

Today's Book Quote Wednesday and the #BookQW word is 'treat'. In Waterborne Exile the freemerchant Marten's plans - years in the making - are unravelling.
Extract from Waterborne Exile by Susan Murray:

“Marten, the sight raises more questions than it ever answers. I’ve seen you as a great man. You had everything in place before Tresilian betrayed us all. And you can again. You will. But you must stay true to your people.”

“What, the people who made me a laughing-stock today?”

“They are still your people. You risked everything for them once.”

“Never again.” Marten stood up slowly, his eyes on Alwenna. “I’ll see you set back on your throne as queen of all the Peninsular Kingdoms before I’ll treat with them.” He pushed away from the table and the wine in the bottle was stirred by his movement, ripples spreading across the dark surface. Alwenna’s attention was drawn into the darkness beneath the perturbed surface and she could no more resist her sight than she could convince Marten of what he must do.

She dived down and down, deeper into darkness, moving through the liquid as if it were nothing more than a breeze. Her hair trailed loose behind her, free and unfettered and her heart pumped blood through her veins with a wicked glee. It was so good to be alive, so good. And revenge would be even better. Ahead of her lay a small cairn. As she drew closer she could see it was composed not of rocks as she had assumed, but of bones. Reposing on the very top of the cairn lay the jewelled dagger.

It's Book Quote Wednesday and today's #BookQW word is 'know'. Far too many options so I've gone with 'known'. In Waterborne Exile Brett's freemerchant father is returning home after a long absence, but he's not alone.
Extract from Waterborne Exile by Susan Murray:

Brett moved his attention to the woman who rode behind his father, eyeing her with curiosity. She had fair skin, ill-suited to the desert heat. There was something ethereal about her, something he couldn’t quite name, some sense of – what, he wasn’t sure. As if aware of his scrutiny she looked up and her eyes met his. Brett caught his breath. For a moment it was as if she could read his innermost thoughts. But that was silly. No one could do such a thing. There was a slight twist of her mouth that might have been a smile then she nodded and he found he could turn his eyes away at last, aware of a sudden sense of great grief. Such a sorrow as he’d never known before. He felt strangely guilty, as if he’d intruded somehow.

He fell in behind their horses as they picked their way up the valley. This was something important here, something momentous.

It's Book Quote Wednesday and today's #BookQW word is 'drip'. In 'Waterborne Exile' Weaver's recovering, slowly. He's unsure exactly what he's recovering from, but he's certain he shouldn't trust the priestess in charge of his care.
Extract from Waterborne Exile by Susan Murray:

Weaver steadied his arm, watching the blood drip into the bowl with a curious detachment. He didn’t care if his own blood spilled or not. But last time… then he’d cared. But he’d had no choice…

Finally the priestess was done and she bound up his arm with a strip of cloth. This was all familiar, and yet not as it had been before. If only he could recall clearly. It had been important to him at the time, but why, or where…

“Lower your arm.” The priestess stepped back and studied him. “Were you always so slow, or did they break you after all?” She seemed to want an answer.

He lowered his arm. “I don’t remember.”

It was no answer at all, but she smiled, her face losing the pinched look and she suddenly looked much younger.

“Do you want to remember?”

Weaver shrugged.

“Do right by me and I’ll help you remember.”

It's Book Quote Wednesday and today's #BookQW word is 'appear'. In this extract from The Waterborne Blade exiled queen Alwenna has plenty to deal with already without experiencing weirdness around water.
Cover of The Waterborne Blade by Susan Murray. A woman in an ornate gown is moving past the viewer, a long dagger held in her blood-spattered right hand. Cover art by Paul Young.

Extract from The Waterborne Blade by Susan Murray:

The cool water had eased the raw discomfort of Alwenna’s fingertips. Now she spread her fingers wide and lowered them to the bottom of the shallow pool. The pebbles on the stream bed were of many different colours: browns, greys and ochres, all intermingled, smooth to the touch. The rippling of the water made them appear alive as they shimmered beneath her fingers, shifting and dancing. The rushing of the stream grew louder and her vision blurred then cleared to reveal the citadel of Highkell in fading light. Behind her she could hear the jingle of harness, and the steady progress of horses’ hooves on the road up to the main gate. She blinked, disorientated, and she was gazing at the pebble-strewn stream bed once more, her hands cold, still sunk to her wrists in the water. The sound of horses’ hooves had gone, but she twisted round to check, nevertheless. She knelt by a stream in a forest clearing, with only Wynne and Weaver for company.

She turned back to the stream, studying the pebbles which lay innocuously beneath the surface of the water. She plunged her hands in again, spreading her fingers over the stones as before. The water was cold and wet and that was all.

It's Book Quote Wednesday and today's #BookQW word is 'busy'. In this extract from The Waterborne Blade Alwenna's plans have gone wrong and the enigmatic freemerchant Marten has intervened for reasons she has yet to learn. As ever, he's saying a lot but telling her very little.

Extract from The Waterborne Blade by Susan Murray:

“It is the time of year when dust storms blow up without warning. Squalls so wild the sand shreds the flesh of the unwary traveller. So powerful they can redraw the landscape in a couple of hours. So enduring they can block out the sun for days at a time.”

Erin pursed her lips and said nothing more.

“Discussing the weather is all well and good, Marten,” Alwenna said. “But we should be on the road already, and now the whole palace is astir. Do you mean to help us or hinder us?”

“I mean to help you, of course. I named you sister, did I not?” He prodded at the bloodied cloak with his foot. “Whose is this?”

“The cloak, or the blood?” Alwenna hardly cared what he thought at that stage. It could only be a matter of time before the [REDACTED] was found. Their bold escape plan had only taken them from bad to worse. And now Erin – hitherto free of any suspicion – was drawn in by her guilt.

“They do not belong to one and the same person? By the Goddess, you have been busy.”

It's Book Quote Wednesday and today's #BookQW word is 'jolt'. In this extract from Waterborne Exile, the young freemerchant Brett is experiencing bad dreams.
Extract from Waterborne Exile by Susan Murray:

He was walking over a vast, empty landscape. Every so often rocks twisted beneath his feet, tugging at his ankle. He knew he had to go on: if he did not, the thing that was pursuing him would catch up with him. And it must not happen here, for there were too many people who would be harmed as a result. The sand beneath his feet grew deeper and deeper, until every step became a struggle. The land was no longer flat and he was climbing a steep hill, sliding back half a step every time he took one foot off the ground to place it ahead of the other. The air about him grew colder and colder, and the last traces of light faded from the sky as one by one the stars were obliterated by a huge shadow that crept overhead.

Brett woke with a jolt as the shadow fell over him and he sat up, shivering.

“I can delay no longer. I shall achieve nothing while I remain here.”

The same could be said of all of them. A wave of weariness swept over her. The moment of peace was gone beyond recall.

“We must follow different paths this time, Marten. They will like as not lead to the same place in the end, anyway.”

“Do you dabble in prophecy now?”

“I can think of few things more futile – I shall not make a habit of it.”
“You will be careful, when I am gone?”

She pressed a hand to her bulging stomach. “Right now I have very little option.”

“Even so – you are uneasy, my lady. Promise me you will do nothing rash.”

Alwenna shook her head. “Such a promise would have seen you dead on the floor of the summer palace months ago. I will do whatever’s necessary.”

Marten pushed himself to his feet. “Then I must go without reassurance from you.”

“You’re a grown man, and you’ve managed well enough these past years.”

“Indeed I have. Behold the proof of my success: destitute and cast out by my own people.”

Alwenna smiled. “Free and unfettered. I wish you well, Marten, truly. You will find the courage to do what is right in the end.”

He hesitated. “What do you know? Will you not tell me?”

“I know a thousand things, none of which may come to pass. Ask me what I don’t know, that would be easier to answer.”

“Then tell me what you do not know, my lady.”

No need to lie this time. “We are stepping out into darkness, Marten. I do not know where our feet will land.”
