"Every fossil here help[s] us to reconstruct the past — to tell the story of where we come from." This is the story of how Lazarus Kgasi worked as a fossil digger and became a superstar in the world of paleontology. Ari Daniel reports for @npr.org. 👉 bit.ly/4qPJAKd
Lazarus Kgasi entered the orbit of paleontology on a whim. After high school, he needed to support his family. He worked a couple of odd jobs before he was hired as a fossil digger. It would forever change his life. Image by Tommy Trenchard/NPR. South Africa.
Before Kgasi discovered this skeleton of a giant prehistoric cat, all that had been known about the species came from a single tooth. This finding, among others, helped earn him the respect of his fellow paleontologists. Image by Tommy Trenchard/NPR. South Africa."I hear voices of our human ancestors," says Kgasi with an air of reverence. Here in the Cradle of Humankind, the unearthing of a treasure trove of hominid fossils helped prove that the African continent was the birthplace of humanity. Image by Tommy Trenchard/NPR.
