Street tree care tips I got from the Cobble Hill Tree Fund that I thought I would share with folks (NYC Parks has been planting a lot of trees lately). Investing in tree coverage in the city at a time when energy bills are skyrocketing and temperatures are rising is vital for all of us.

Congratulations on your new trees!
For at least the first two growing seasons trees need regular watering. This way they will generate many new roots and become better able to support themselves for the long term.

All trees need to be watered from early spring until winter. Autumn is an important time for root growth, so please do not neglect this important season. As a rule, watering should continue in the autumn up until the first real freeze- after the temperature has been below 32 degrees for several days.

When there is not a substantial rain (less than 1 inch in a week) each tree needs 20 gallons of water once per week.

In drought periods or when the temperature averages 85 degrees or above, each 2.5-3" caliper tree needs 20 gallons twice per week.

Twenty gallons is the equivalent of 4 of those white or orange 5 gallon compound buckets. A slow hose run in the root zone for 15-20 minutes should give the equivalent, as well. Even better, use a Treegator, these green zip-on watering bags can be filled with 15 gallons of water. The water will drop slowly out of the bag and into the root zone. Alternatively. There's a product called TreeDiaper, which is less visible and also absorbs water from rain and slowly releases it.

If there has been a substantial rain (the kind that you need an umbrella for that lasts several hours, and usually more than 1 inch in a week) you may count that as one 20 gallon watering.

Do NOT water a little bit each day The trees need good deep watering. Fewer, deeper waterings are far better for root development and tree health.

In horticulture there is a saying that plants "sleep, creep, and then leap" in the first few seasons after installation. This is because trees are still adjusting to the traumatic event of having roots severed, being dug up, and transported many miles from the farms where they grew up, often into a busy and congested urban environment! The first year after being planted a tree may sleep or may only "creep" and not appear to be in top shape. With proper care the tree should be settled in by the following season and have rebuilt a sufficient root system to "leap" with new growth.
