We spoke with @authorsabb.bsky.social member @curiosityjones.bsky.social about her experience with #BookChallenges and bans including her title that was pulled for review in Duval County, FL, Unusual Chickens for the Exceptional Poultry Farmer. "Don't let books just disappear." K. Jones
An image of author Kelly Jones alongside her title Unusual Chickens for the Exceptional Poultry Farmer. Title says Authors Against Book Bans speak out. A logo for Publishing Professionals Against Book Bans sits at the bottom.PPABB Question: What's your experience with being banned? K.Jones Answer: Unusual Chickens is a funny book about taking care of chickens that have super powers. It was pulled for review from Duval County Public Schools in Florida in 2022 in response to newly-passed legislation, along with the entire Essential Voices collection that had been purchased to help boost literacy. (Nearly 70% of the students in that district are of color.) There was no challenge from a parent or from the community.PPABB Question: What do you want publishing professionals to know about your experience?
K. Jones Answer: This was one example of the enormous effect that legislation can have on what readers can access. Even the idea that books might fall under this legislation triggered a massive soft-ban. With that as our landscape, none of us can ignore potential legislation that could take away our freedom to read...I think it's helpful for authors and illustrators to be aware of soft censorship and how to identify it, and for the professionals they work with to be clear that soft-bans are a pattern of attack and not an isolated incident.PPABB Question: What do you wish readers in general knew about book bans?
K. Jones Answer: It's really important to look for books and topics that you feel should be on the shelves, and if they're not there, to ask why. If they're popular and checked out to readers, great! If they're hidden in an office or in a section that's not appropriate for their audience, or if they've been stolen by someone with an agenda, that's a soft-ban. Don't let books just disappear.

Literacy and learning thrive when information and stories can be shared freely. We urge lawmakers to reject this legislation that directly threatens the principles of intellectual freedom and our First Amendment rights. #VoteNOonHR7661 #VoteNOonHR8705 #VoteNOonHR2616
Graphic stating “There are three censorship bills in the House and Senate that pose a direct danger to the freedom to read” accompanied by a danger symbol. The Bad: HR 7661 aka the Stop the Sexualization of Children Act. Point one: uses broad and vague language that doesn’t clearly define the terms sexually oriented materials. Point two: explicitly includes gender dysphoria and “transgenderism” targeting LGBTQ+ stories. Point three: expands government control over education and undermines the 1st amendment The Worse: HR 8705 aka the CHARLIE Act. Point one: limits teachers from discussing topics like gender identity, racial history, and social justice. Point two: vague and politically charged, this bill reeks of radical indoctrination. Point three: potential to weaponize federal education funding and limit teacher discretion. Point four: named after Charlie Kirk. The Downright Ugly: HR 2616 aka “PROTECT Kids Act”. Point one: will force teachers to out LGBTQ+ students. Point two: contains no safe harbor language for at-risk students in potentially abusive households. Point three: restricts educational freedom and safe expression.

Black text on a yellow background reads: “Authors Against Book Bans speak out” and “Ryan Estrada” accompanied by an image of a man wearing glasses and the cover of the book “Banned Book Club”Black text on a white background that reads, “What’s your name and most challenged book?” “My name is Ryan Estrada. Ironically, my book Banned Book Club, which I wrote with my wife Kim Hyun Sook about her experiences smuggling illegal books under a dictator in 1980s Korea, has been banned in six different cities. My second most banned book is Occulted, about how my friend Amy Rose used banned books to escape a UFO death cult. I guess the book banners really don’t like to see that their tactics are the same as despots and cult leaders.”Black text on a white background that reads, “What’s your experience with being banned?” “I thought I was writing about history. When we started writing in 2017, book banning was not a topic of discussion in the US. In fact, the reason we got our book deal was that the editor was SHOCKED at the idea that South Korea was only a few decades away from having state-banned books. By the time the book came out three years later, not only were books being banned by the hundreds, but our book quickly became one of them.”Black text on a white background that reads, “What do you wish readers in general knew about book bans? It’s all a show. They claim to be a giant network of parents concerned about pornography in schools, but that’s all a lie. It’s like a dozen people, and I know all of them [...] None of them have children in the school districts they target. Many don’t even live in those districts and drive in from another state. They are political operatives, funded by organizations whose investments in private schools are benefited by making public schools worse, or whose campaigns benefit from damaging libraries.

#HR7661 is a national book censorship bill that we should all be aware of. Find more details below and follow for updates and actions you can take to fight back.
“What is H.R. 7661” atop a logo that reads Publishing Professionals Against Book Bans“House Resolution 7661 ( H.R. 7661) is a National Book Censorship Bill introduced in February 2026 by Mary Miller (R-IL). It seeks to modify the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 by prohibiting the use of funds under the act ‘to develop, implement, facilitate, host, or promote any program or activity for, or to provide or promote literature or other materials to, children under the age of 18 that includes sexually oriented material, and for other purposes.’”“H.R. 7661 is an anti-trans bill that defines ‘sexually oriented material’ as anything broaching the topics of ‘gender dysphoria or transgender OSM’ (quote credit to Book Riot)” “Couched in regressive language purporting to protect children, the bill aims to ban books by and about marginalized groups. This bill is concerning because it limits the use of certain funds, but it is dangerous in the precedent it could create.”“Instead of making our public schools and libraries stronger and moving us all forward together, some politicians are choosing to waste critical resources and time on distraction and division. It’s time our leaders get serious about what works: fully funding our public schools and libraries so we can continue working together to improve our neighborhoods, where most of our children learn and grow and where we all can have a say.”
