Cyril reads Matthew 25 simply: the condemned did the opposite of what the saints were praised for. Works righteousness remains vigorously policed. Doing the literal opposite of feeding the hungry passes without theological comment. Cyril considered the connection worth making explicit. #christian

Dods: slavery appealed to self-interest. What ended it was slow Christian leavening plus vigorous assertion of Christian principle. Christian sentiment is now being cultivated in rather different directions. The leavening appears to be running in reverse.

Calvin on Psalm 72: remove protections and the powerful exploit the weak. The magistrate exists to avenge the poor against injustice. Nobody objects in principle. Parkhurst: Christian leaven produced family equality—fathers once despots, husbands tyrants, now affection and equality. Women increasingly equal before the law. Conservative energy now reverses this, attributing it to secular corruption. Parkhurst would disagree. #presbyterian #equality

Calvin on James 1:27: religion is not demonstrated in pomp and ceremony but in visiting those in necessity and alleviating distress. These are the duties God’s servants ought to attend to. Calvin considered this the actual definition of religion. #calvinism #christian

Jerome: wealth is no spiritual obstacle if used well. Poverty is no recommendation if the poor fail to avoid wrongdoing. Neither class gets automatic credit or condemnation. Contemporary factions have strong preferences. Jerome found both theologically unsupported. #christian #poverty #wealth
