Light Rail Mythbusters: #2 - Light Rail and BRT | Public Transport Association of Canberra
Can a bus system really deliver the same benefits as light rail? We analyse the real infrastructure costs and unique local constraints.

🏛️ Planning: The National Capital Authority's strict heritage and regulatory constraints make building a fully separated, high-capacity BRT corridor through Canberra's Central National Area practically impossible. ...

💰 Cost: Genuine BRT requires significant infrastructure investment. Australian data shows comprehensive BRT can cost just as much per kilometre to build as light rail, while offering lower capacity and higher ongoing operating costs. ...

Our city's precast concrete bus shelters are so much more than their orange and cream colour scheme.

The current provisional registration includes the "orange and cream" colour scheme as an "attribute of significance". While well-intentioned, this risks making future paint jobs bureaucratically cumbersome and potentially cost-prohibitive. ...

In addition to Brisbane Metro's conspicuous absence, the article does give favourable reference to the TransLohr system in France - which a. isn't a Trackless Tram (it uses both rubber tires and a steel wheel on a rail), and b. has significant issues, and is regarded by experts as a cautionary tale!

It's funny to see the trackless tram boosters oddly silent on Brisbane Metro the week it fully launches. That project costs $1.7b for 200m of tunnel, a few station upgrades and a fleet of vehicles. It's not a cheaper alternative! citynews.com.au/2025...
