Scientific publishing has shifted but not improved. First, readers couldn’t access papers. Now, authors can’t afford to publish them (APCs ~$3000). With today’s open-source tools, it may actually be cheaper for institutions to run journals than to pay APCs. #OpenAccess #DiamondOA #OpenScience

Go Iran! It is inspiring to see citizens standing up and making their own demands for change. True, lasting transformation comes from within, without needing external interference to reclaim a country's future and resources. I'm moved by your courage!

The recent collapse of a high-profile journal is not just a scandal but hopefully a warning sign of a system that has drifted far away from its core mission. Sources for more information: www.sciencedirect.com/journal/scie... www.science.org/content/arti... english.elpais.com/science-tech...

Science belongs to everyone. Knowledge should flow freely, not be trapped behind paywalls, resold to the researchers who produce it, or silenced by costly publishing fees over unpaid work. 👇

Pedro Tarroso @ptarroso.bsky.social · 03/12/2025
We moved from an era where accessing science was forbidden due to expensive paywalls, to an era where publishing has become impossibly expensive! It is inaccessible to many researchers to publish without institutional backing or reserving significant percentage of science funding to pay publishing 👇
110
Pedro Tarroso @ptarroso.bsky.social · 03/12/2025
Authors pay $4,500 per article while journals publish 40+ papers per issue. Scientific publishing has become a billionaire industry built on unpaid editorial and peer-review labor. With automated and non-printed workflows the production costs are near zero and still using online ads along articles 👇

The journal Science of the Total Environment has now been removed from the Web of Science index! A dramatic fall triggered by editorial practices that inflated number of articles, including some approved through fake peer reviews. #Science #OpenScience #Research #OpenAccess #ScienceForAll 👇

This is deeply tragic. The destruction is overwhelming. An unbearable nightmare. Unacceptable and incomprehensible. The disregard for human life is horrifying. Killing by bombs was wrong, fostering famine is beyond any measure of decency. So sad that it feels wrong to react to this post with a heart

A wasteland of rubble, dust and graves: how Gaza looks from the sky
The Guardian joins a Jordanian military airdrop for a rare chance to observe a landscape devastated by Israel’s offensive Seen from the air, Gaza looks like the ruins of an ancient civilisation, brought to light after centuries of darkness. A patchwork of concrete shapes and shattered walls, neighbourhoods scattered with craters, rubble and roads that lead nowhere. The remnants of cities wiped out. But here, there has been no natural disaster and no slow passage of time. Members of Jordan’s military stand among pallets of aid about to be dropped on Gaza. Continue reading...

What an interesting opinion piece, with a thought-provoking title! Are the most 'segregated' among us actually those who choose to isolate themselves in an elite bubble, unwilling to socialise with others? I believe that this is something far more widespread, not only UK.

With "tidy" I mean this idea of data flow with pipes and avoidance of loops, prevalent in tidyverse. My comment is about personal use and not suggesting any ban of packages! That's in the other social media 😃

Pedro Tarroso @ptarroso.bsky.social · 14/11/2024
Great resources there! Thanks! I completely agree! I understand the appeal of tidy but it just seems another language. It seems to work when you have established flow for data but hampers a bit the freedom and creativity that base R gives.
