1987 Wreck’n Ball pinball machine. This game is a 1-of-1 prototype machine built by Pat Lawlor and Larry DeMar in Pat’s garage. It eventually went on to become Williams’ 1988 pin Banzai Run. #pinball #arcade #oneofone #1980s #patlawlor

Sixty years ago today, Ralph Baer wrote his initial proposal for a game device that would plug into a standard television set. While his initial ideas are not what became the Odyssey, this moment was highly consequential for the future of video games. 🧵
The first four pages of Ralph Baer's "Disclosure Backup Data -TVGD" dated September 1, 1966. This became the basis for the technology that powered the first video game console, the Odyssey.

But when we order replacement glasses, we always ask the manufacturers send us plexiglass, which is unbreakable. Why isn't plexiglass used in the first place?

ANSWER: Plexiglass back glasses for flipper games are always available. They can be ordered through your local Williams, Bally, or Gottlieb Distributor's parts department. However, the cost is approximately double the glass price, and in addition to the higher cost, the reason production machines aren't equipped with plexiglass is a good one. We have found that a cigarette can easily burn a hole in the plexiglass. If this is done near the replay reel, free games can easily be registered by sticking a wire through the hole. Therefore we do not recommend plexiglass back glasses. (A nswer supplied by Billy DeSelm, sales manager, Williams Electronics.)

Mr. McAdams of drain-circling Game Plan certainly exudes the runaway enthusiasm of 1985's pinball industry We're not sure about Mr. Sharpe's attitude at that moment, as something seems to be obscuring his expression

Looking down a row of games with most of them on the left hand side. They are primarily Williams arcade games including Robotron, Moon Patrol, Stargate, Defender, and Joust. Narc is in the foreground. All told you can see about 30 arcade games as it curves inward towards the back of the row and behind it is another row where Atari System 1 cabinets like Indiana Jones, Road Runner, and Peter Pack Rat are visible. On the far left is a 3 player Ironman Ivan Stewart's Super Off RoadA curving row of pinball machines where the machines in the center are closest to the camera. There are about 30 machines in total with the two in front both the rare Capcom pinball game Kingpin. A couple notable games include Big Bang Bar, Tales of the Arabian Nights, Pulp Fiction, World Cup Soccer, Big Lebowski, Twilight Zone, and Funhouse.A row of Nintendo arcade cabinets. From left to right: Dr. Mario, Punch-Out, Donkey Kong x2, Space Demon, Popeye, Mario Bros, Donkey Kong 3, and Donkey Kong Jr. There's the edge of a Gauntlet visible at the end.The control panel for Beatmania with the two scratch pads and buttons. Someone sent me this and I was horrified, so now you're seeing it too What year is this, and what tape is it? Quad 8-track, or cassette?
Bro with towering power mullet in white tux by driver door of a black Pontiac Trans Am. Year is difficult to pin down, which makes the added question more debatable:

"What tape does he have ready to blast in that Trans Am's stereo?"

Earlier this week I learned the 12yo didn’t know what a pinball machine was. Don’t worry. We have rectified the situation. Tonight he and his sister learned firsthand.
A child stands playing a brightly lit Pulp Fiction pinball machine in a dark arcade. The glowing backglass artwork features characters from the film, while neighboring pinball machines themed to Rush and The Phantom of the Opera add colorful lights on either side. Above the machines, a large skeleton decoration with glowing red eyes looms over the arcade, enhancing the playful, spooky atmosphere.

Steve Ritchie photo and bio in Play Meter - Volume 10, Number 17 - September 15th 1984, page 40:

Steve Ritchie is a designer of video and pinball games. He entered the amusement game industry in 1974 as a technician for Atari, designing its universal test unit and a burn-in oven system for the manufacturing division. In 1975, he was promoted to the Engineering Department as supervisor of the newly formed pinball prototype lab.

Steve created his first pinball, Airborne Avenger, in 1976 and followed it with Superman in 1977, which became Atari’s largest selling pinball. He accepted an offer from Williams Electronics in 1978 and, later that year, developed Flash which still holds the production record at Williams. In the next four years at Williams, Steve created Firepower, Stellar Wars, Black Knight, Hyperball, and provided conceptual work on Defender.

With a desire to work independently, he left Williams to form King Video Design in June 1982, returning to his home state of California. With veteran hardware engineer Doug Hughes and a crew of software pros, he developed Devastator, a high resolution space-war flight simulator. The company has also engineered a digital imaging system, which speeds up the game development process tremendously. Presently, two games are in development. Both are slated for the Devastator hardware system as conversion kits.

Commissioned a "mad scientist in a toy factory” by his 8th grade teachers, and later, “The King” (of pinball), he loves working at the drafting table or computer terminal on a new game concept. As a former Coast Guardsman and rock & roll guitarist, Steve enjoys fast boating, water skiing, and music.
