"When books become 'texts' that we 'interact' with according to criteria of utility, the written word will have become simply another aspect of our advertising-driven televisual reality. […] It means nothing less than the death of inwardness—and of the book." – Susan Sontag
I’m sorry to have to tell you that books are now considered an endangered species. By books, I also mean the conditions of reading that make possible literature and its soul effects. Soon, we are told, we will call up on “bookscreens” any “text” on demand, and will be able to change its appearance, ask questions of it, “interact” with it. When books become “texts” that we “interact” with according to criteria of utility, the written word will have become simply another aspect of our advertising-driven televisual reality. This is the glorious future being created, and promised to us, as something more “democratic.” Of course, it means nothing less than the death of inwardness—and of the book.

Framing these as contradictory seems short-sighted to me. Denji's relationships to shounen-esque masculinity and heterosexuality are *constant* themes of the story, and are almost always framed critically. There's no good way to parse so much of the manga if we reduce it to just your framing.

I'm just a WH Auden account right now
Each lover has a theory of his own
About the difference between the ache
Of being with his love, and being alone:

Why what, when dreaming, is dear flesh and bone
That really stirs the senses, when awake,
Appears a simulacrum of his own.

Narcissus disbelieves in the unknown;
He cannot join his image in the lake
So long as he assumes he is alone.

The child, the waterfall, the fire, the stone,
Are always up to miscief, though, and take
The universe for granted as their own.

The elderly, like Proust, are always prone
To think of love as a subjective fake;
The more they love, the more they feel alone.

Whatever view we hold, it must be shown
Why every lover has a wish to make
Some other kind of otherness his own:
Perhaps, in fact, we never are alone.

Far from his illness The wolves ran on through the evergreen forests, The peasant river was untempted by the fashionable quays; By mourning tongues The death of the poet was kept from his poems. But for him it was his last afternoon as himself, An afternoon of nurses and rumours; The provinces of his body revolted, The squares of his mind were empty, Silence invaded the suburbs, The current of his feeling failed; he became his admirers. Now he is scattered among a hundred cities And wholly given over to unfamiliar affections, To find his happiness in another kind of wood And be punished under a foreign code of conscience. The words of a dead man Are modified in the guts of the living.

Such dreams are amorous; they are indeed: But no one but myself is loved in these, While time flies on above the dreamer’s head, Flies on, flies on, and with your beauty flies, And pride succeeds to each succeeding state, Still able to buy up the life within, License no liberty except his own, Order the fireworks after the defeat.

I wish I had the confidence required to write an article that accuses others of not having "arguments," only to turn around and quite literally direct my own "arguments" at a computer-generated strawman.

I'm going to be organising a small reading group for The Origins of Totalitarianism by Hannah Arendt. It'll be starting over the holidays and run at a relaxed pace over the whole year for the sake of the slower readers. Leave a reply to express interest. I'll DM details later.

Populism that's rooted an in amorphous "them" vs "us" already has its dangers. But notice how this particular narrative also introduces a unitary social organism, and then papers over all individuality in favour of one's "contribution" to the whole. This is a preparatory discourse for fascism.

On some level, people like this never changed their politics even if they shifted leftward. The special hatred that they have for liberals and anarchists and the like makes a lot more psychological sense once you identify the kinds of people who would have journeys like this.

Correct as far as it goes—deserves a passing mark. But people need be more critical of the mechanical naturalism and utilitarianism that is so often taken as the default ethical framework, beyond just pointing out the hypocrisy of anti-AI arguments. Even if that hypocrisy is apparent.

The reasons Hitler had to die had nothing to do with retribution or deserving it. Hitler had to die to end National Socialism. Holding onto this conservative idea that justice is punishment will be lethal to the left in the fullness of time, as it concedes the concept of justice to the right.

People say that Bluesky is more left-wing than Twitter. But I don't think that's quite true. The hard left are still over there. It's just that Twitter is a more hateful place. So much of what gets currency over there is about seeming cool, detached, and superior. This post is pretty representative.

Here's the story. It was about On Photography, not Against Interpretation. Well, that makes sense—On Photography is a more consistent book anyway.

People never really stopped believing in the gods of Olympus as the personification of natural forces. They just now believe in the "300 Families" and the "Elders of Zion" as the god-form of the capitalist system of social organisation. We're closer to ancient superstitions than we realise.

This is like pornography for everything I hate in political analysis. - "Bush v. Gore changed the election" (not true) - "Presidents decide history" (wrong) - "Everything goes better if the Democrats win" (lmao) Truly impressive.

Musk might be about to (once again) prove that money cannot actually buy political power in the way people imagine

I will also post political stuff. Sorry if that is annoying, but part of what I think makes entertainment impactful is its political dimensions. Please use this chart to call me your preferred political slur.
