Happiest of birthdays to Guest Editor, Public Domain genius and translation wiz, Shawn Garrett. Very aptly, Shawn was born on the feast day of Saint Jerome, the patron saint of archivists, scholars, librarians and translators.

I'm seeing a lot of this in both fics and published books alike, and I cannot stay silent any longer. Folks, a room cannot erupt. It cannot go silent or still or stop breathing. A room cannot *do* anything because it is not alive. It's the PEOPLE in the room who can erupt or go still and silent or stop breathing. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

As a Swede who just rewatched Midsommar, feel I have to clarify something

So, I just rewatched Midsommar. Terribly good film to be fair, but as a Swede I feel the need to clarify something. I really don't want anyone to get the wrong idea of us and our traditions. The movie depicts something rather uncommon, almost unheard of. We all want it, but we rarely get it. I feel that Ari Asters depiction of the weather in the film is simply just pure fiction. I mean, midsommarafton without rain? Not to mention several days without rain!? Haha, come on! It is customary to be ready at a moments notice to run inside because of a sudden skyfall. Please don't assume we have that kind of weather regularly.
The rest is pretty on point

OFFICIAL STATEMENT
As part of our ongoing enhanced monitoring period, we have received a new report regarding another unexpected sighting within the Rainforest Biome.
The footage you are about to see has not yet been independently verified. However, we now have reason to believe our initial assessment of a single unidentified creature in the Biome was not accurate.
This remains an evolving situation, and updates will be shared.
Enhanced monitoring will continue between:

…
Abstract
Data centers of cloud providers hold millions of processor cores, exabytes of storage, and petabytes of network band-width. Research shows that in 2019, data centers consumed more than 2% of global electricity production, where 50% of consumption targeted for cooling infrastructures. While the most effective solution for thermal distribution is liquid cool-ing, technical challenges and complexities make it expensive.
We suggest using living spiders as cooling devices for data centers. A prior work shows that spider silk has high thermal conductivity, close to that of copper: the second-best metallic conductor. Spiders not only generate spider silk but maintain it. Recruiting spiders for the job requires no more than inserting bugs to the data center for the spiders to catch. This solution is effective, self-sustaining, and environment-friendly, but requires solving a number of non-trivial technical and zoological challenges on the way to make it practical.

There are a number of short stories in anthologies and collections, specifically those that have been or will be published in 2026, that deserve to get in front of more readers.

We want to shine more light across our community and widen our circle to make room for more writers and readers. In specific, PseudoPod has pencilled out space in a large portion of November and December 2026 to support this effort.

Tap for the whole thing. It’s worth it, we promise
[photo of a white tree, surrounded by green ones]
Trees, like animals, can also experience albinism, though it is extremely rare.

jumpingjacktrash
the reason it's rare is because without chlorophyll, the plant can't get energy, and dies shortly after sprouting unless it has some other source of food. so if you see a plant as big as the one in the picture that doesn't have any green in its leaves, it's getting its nutrition from the roots of a neighboring plant of the same species, feeding on the sugars created by the other plant's photosynthesis.
albino plants are basically vampires.

heywetotheotherworld
For a long time, scientists thought they were parasites, and couldn't figure out why the bigger plants didn't release chemicals to kill them.
Turns out, the lil' ghost redwoods benefit their hosts by filtering toxins and acting as a sort of backup immune system.
They're vampires, and they're commensal, symbiotic mutualists!

The bones of Santa have been leaking liquid for 1,700 years.
The tomb of St. Nicholas is in Bari, Italy. For nearly 17 centuries, a clear, water-like liquid has secreted from his bones (an oil, known as St. Nicholas Manna). The Church collects it once a year on his feast day

“Just think: right now the new Santa is flexing his ovipositor so he can leave eggs inside every chimney”
Pippa Timothy
Dec 23, 2017
fun science fact, the North Pole elves are actually a eusocial gestalt (like ants, bees, etc). Santa is the Queen, not in the sense of power or authority but in that he is the sole reproducer.
Each Santa lives about a year, and then they feed a pupal elf royal jelly so that it matures into a Claus.
His belly jiggles like a bowl full of jelly on Christmas because generally they hatch a new
Claus the day before Christmas Eve.
Just think: right now the new Santa is flexing his ovipositor so he can leave eggs inside every chimney, drying out his wings for his first flight.

"The Hermit Crab God" by ego_bot

Even though this story came out at the tail end of August, it has a real Halloween horror feel. Koji, a marine biology student, sees the worst in the world and in humanity. He seems to enjoy being cruel, yet that cruelty also haunts him. He goes out of his way to take his anger and guilt out on hermit crabs. I don't typically read stories involving animal abuse, but the point the author was making, about nihilism and environmentalism and not giving up, made it worth diving into.
