I don't think AI is going to clean my bathroom any time soon. Is it gonna design me a shoe rack? That's an enjoyable part of the process, I don't want that to be automated. Can it buy the wood? I guess that'd be nice, but it'd save me 10 minutes in a multi-hour project.

You really should have. You should create a list of promising areas of inquiry that are ignored because of cooties. I think these would make great avenues of research that might have some low-hanging fruit for younger academics, and a pathway for advocacy.

I have a smartphone, but I've not found AI useful. Most of the time its output has either been a slightly faster Google search or objectively wrong. "Useful to any human who owns a smartphone" is a pretty bold claim, and one that I've not found to be true, being a smartphone user and all.

I just finished the book "Killed by a Traffic Engineer." It's really about this exact topic, how technology that seems convenient ends up prescribing a specific way of doing things that makes life exponentially more complex and less convenient (and in traffic engineering, makes life more dangerous).

Not necessarily. I think that sex scenes are just awkward, especially in theaters. You don't have to be sex-repulsed to find watching a steamy scene with a bunch of strangers (or with friends/family) uncomfortable.

When I was a kid, the best toy was a bunch of off-cut pieces of plywood. I'd stack them into castles and houses, then fling marbles at them, or I'd stack them like dominoes and topple them over. The elaborate figurines and expensive RC cars that she got me were fun for 5 minutes, then forgotten.

Regarding the "what we used to do in the old days" comment. What we did in the old days is exactly why we're here. The US and Canada were aggressively fighting every fire for a very long time, building up tons of underbrush and making these big fires possible. Going back would make things worse.

And there's quite a few where being good at your job is bad for you. I work in manufacturing, and every optimization I make becomes the new baseline. I get a "keep up the good work!" And that's it. I optimized processes to be 3x faster, but I'm not paid 3x more. The incentives just aren't there.
