US Citizens: it's voting time. Even as an overseas voter, it's important to participate. I've submitted my vote already. If your voting location allows it, get in early. If you're overseas and you've not voted in a while, check www.fvap.gov for how to vote. You're still a voter in the […]

@nihilistnomya Wow, that looks quite challenging. Looks like you're making good progress on it though! Are you looking to be able to do full gymnastics routines?

@Edent Being Google, I could absolutely see someone putting in code to detect screen orientation and make that work. I was disappointed that it did not.

How to be a petty motherfucker
Is there really a difference between being bitter or being petty? Most of the time I feel the latter is being confused with the former. Am I missing something here?

@mina It's also a fairly standard play in capital intensive industries. Build something before there are regulations and then welcome in regulations as a significant hurdle to competition. It also helps that the regulations will be built around the business models of the early entrants to the […]

**Many people who immigrate to Australia develop hayfever or asthma within their first 3 years here. I've anecdotally heard the same about interstate transplants, but haven't seen any data on it 10/10

There's no need to panic. Just make sure you have a plan, anything in your plan is on hand/refilled/in date, and check if the plan needs updating since the last time you thought about it. 9/10

Thunderstorm asthma completely overwhelms ambulance capacity, so help may not come for a long time. In 2016, a lot of the deaths occurred when people who were having bad attacks couldn't wait longer for an ambulance and tried to make their own way to hospital, but going outside into the pollen […]

This may not be the year we get another big thunderstorm asthma event, but after 10 years and a pandemic it's easy to become complacent. The Australian Thunderstorm Asthma season goes from Oct 1st until December 31st, but all the Thunderstorm Asthma events to date have been in November (Except […]

Make sure you have an inhaler with you, and just as importantly a spacer. And if it's been a while, look up how to use them - more than 80% of adults have bad technique! 6/10

If we have a thunderstorm asthma event, pandemic air filtration precautions are actually super useful. A room with a HEPA filter going will have a much lower pollen count, and N95/P2 masks are effective at filtering the pollen as they remove particles down to 1µm. 5/10

So if you're a person who has a history of hayfever, asthma, childhood asthma, adult onset/post COVID asthma, or a recent immigrant* then you should probably make a plan for what to do if you are affected by Thunderstorm Asthma. 4/10

Since the 2016 thunderstorm asthma event, there's been changes to asthma management guidelines. Salbutamol (ventolin) used to be the "reliever" inhaler everyone had, but that has changed. Some people don't even need relievers in their day to day life anymore, and not all preventers are great at […]

In short, conditions are lining up perfectly for this to be another thunderstorm asthma year. The wet winter means lots of rye grass growth, and a hot dry spring means when it dries out we have high pollen days. The third ingredient required for Thunderstorm Asthma is a storm rolling in with […]

A note from a paramedic friend of mine who worked the 2016 thunderstorm #asthma event in #melbourne #australia The last time we had a Victorian winter as wet as 2026 has been was 2016. We then went into a hot, dry spring - which is what's happening again. 1/10

@gedankenstuecke I looked up nonce to explain it to someone else. I had previously understood it to be just "idiot", but apparently in British slang it's "child rapist". Mostly posting this for anyone else who may not have picked up on that detail. Makes the whole thing a lot more pointed.

I still lurk on the r/London subreddit and came across this hilarious piece of activist art which turns a bin into a "smart glasses amnesty bin" that apparently is just across the Ray Ban store. 💅 www.reddit.com/r/london/comments/1w… #pervertglasses
A bin with some ad busting layover stuck to it. Under the ray ban and Meta logo it reads "smart glasses amnesty bin" next to a pictogram of a person throwing the glasses into a bin.

Further text reads: Wearing hidden camera glasses massively increases the likelihood of people thinking you're a nonce

France has added fees of up to 50% of an items price in an effort to curb ultra-fast fashion. This seems like an unalloyed good that #Australia needs to get on board with. I was somewhat horrified to learn that Australia has the highest per capita use of textiles in the world and that around […]
