we have to be so careful about what the media we consume because it really does influence how we perceive ourselves :/.

saying this b/c i just read a really scary story about a guy who read so many chivalric romances that he hit upon the strangest notion that ever madman in this world hit upon, and that was that he fancied it was right and requisite, as well for the support of his own honour as for the service of his country, that he should make a knight-errant of himself, Don Quixote de la Mancha,

and partly thinking of this bit from an article i read a while ago www.guernicamag.com/joli-petit-a...
Despite our fun, we were not actually embarrassed by my mother’s accent—although in third grade in Ramallah, I reportedly said to my father that I would prefer a fat Arab mother who cooked kousa mahshi (stuffed squash), which made her cry. We were proud of my mother’s adventurousness and kindness. Her interest in and respect for people very different from her was, in fact, part of the reason why she was able to learn to speak Arabic at all. It was not linguistic talent that made it possible, but a sensibility. She was at first limited by a tiny vocabulary, like that of a child. But she relinquished power and allowed herself, with some humor, to be frustrated, addressed on the level of the limited Arabic that she could speak, until she could converse more comfortably. And learning to speak Arabic was not merely a matter of exchanging English for Arabic sentences, but of adopting new modes of life. Indeed, unlike most expats, my mother did not seem to feel besieged by too much newness—or perhaps she rose above this natural feeling of insecurity and resisted socializing exclusively with other Americans and anglophones. She clearly wanted to interact with and learn from other people. And she knew intuitively, as a guest in a new society, that it would be unfitting to force others to speak a second language—forcing them to make the effort to cross a cultural and linguistic bridge over to her, instead of the inverse. This kind of linguistic imposition is commonplace within colonial dynamics and it would have been easy for her to unthinkingly follow suit—but she did not. In almost all colonial contexts, there is also a long line of experts who try to gain “mastery” over a language or several, and with a similarly imposing attitude. But my mother never had the ambition to became that fluent; she spoke enough to make new friends, engage with them, and get around.

i don't feel super confident in applying it widely lol but i think it's true for some people. i'm also kind of just riffing on this bit from hegel, which i think is at least interesting to think about when you see someone with power crashing out over insufficient fawning from someone without
The passage describes, in narrative form, the development of self-consciousness as such in an encounter between what are thereby (i.e., emerging only from this encounter) two distinct, self-conscious beings. The essence of the dialectic is the movement or motion of recognizing, in which the two self-consciousnesses are constituted in each being recognized as self-conscious by the other. This movement, inexorably taken to its extreme, takes the form of a "struggle to the death" in which one masters [beherrscht] the other, only to find that such lordship makes the very recognition he had sought impossible, since the bondsman, in this state, is not free to offer it.

This passage has been influential in a variety of disciplines. In particular, Alexandre Kojève's anthropological interpretation of what he renders the master–slave dialectic (French: Dialectique du maître et de l'esclave) has inspired 20th-century work on topics Hegel never pursued such as feminism and critical race studies.

comic from 2022 about being alive
7-panel comic of a dinosaur. first two panels show the dinosaur in a forest of leafless trees looking at the sun. a text bubble reads "i'm worried i'm evil". the third and fourth panels show the dinosaur eating flesh torn from the corpse of another dinosaur. two word bubbles read "a world where death is the cost of life" "that's stupid". the fifth and sixth panels show the dinosaur walking. it has an expression of abject terror. two word bubbles say "i don't think this suffering can be ethically justified" "any suffering, in fact". the seventh panel shows the dinosaur looking at another dinosaur of the same species, or perhaps itself. two word bubbles say "one day" "there will be no more of me".

it's probably tacky to quote daoist texts as an american but i will always love the bit in the zhuangzi that expresses this
Master Eastwall asked Zhuangzi, "Where is this Course you speak of?"
Zhuangzi said, "There is nowhere it is not."
"You must be more specific."
"It is in the ants and crickets."
"So low?"
"It is in the grasses and weeds."
"Even lower?"
"It is in the tiles and shards."
"So extreme?"
"It is in the piss and shit."

if you'd like a recent book that touches on weimar media, there's ullrich's fateful hours
Pro-democracy circles everywhere felt relief around the turn of the year 1932–33. “The massive National Socialist attack on the democratic state has been repelled,” announced editor in chief Rudolf Kircher in the New Year’s edition of the Frankfurter Zeitung. “Today we can be certain: The cart is not stuck in the mud forever.” [citation 53] The other major liberal newspapers struck a similar note. A year-in-review article in the Vossische Zeitung, entitled “Year of Decision,” proclaimed that the Weimar Republic had been saved: “Not because it was defended, but because the attackers finished each other off. It was a journey through the Devil’s Gorge that one cannot look back on without shuddering.” This raised the question for editorial writer Julius Elbau: “Will Hitler, who in the frenzy of victory wanted to be Caesar and Messiah rolled into one, be sobered by the failure and find a path to responsible cooperation after all?” [citation 54]

lenin on imperialism kind of rules. like oh there's the global south being described
Great as this sum is, it does not explain the aggressive imperialism of Great Britain. This is explained by the 90 to 100 million pounds sterling income from ‘invested’ capital, the income of the rentiers. The income of the bondholders is five times greater than the income obtained from the foreign trade of the greatest ‘trading’ country in the world. This is the essence of imperialism and imperialist parisitism. For that reason the term, ‘rentier state’ (Rentnerstaat), or usurer state, is passing into current use in the economic literature that deals with imperialism. The world has become divided into a handful of usurer states on the one side, and a vast majority of debtor states on the other.

connection to these rightwing movements or subjectivities. In its social existence, Kawai’s system hardly differs from the sentimental liberalism mentioned above, though that sentimental liberalism is more extreme than Kawai’s in that in being free of partisan politics—as an “enlightened centrism”—sentimental liberalism appears as a freedom from all political activity itself.

todays’ intellectual universe. But when it comes to questions of what is fascism, liberalism, or Marxism, not only is there no consensus within conventional wisdom or in the ideologues’ own understanding, but it is also plainly true that there are many fundamentally distorted self-understandings. For example, contemporary Japanese fascists are constantly explaining that their own thought is in fact antifascist, and liberals understand liberalism [jiyūshugi] as nothing more than the pursuit of freedom [jiyū]—which in fact results in liberalism opposing liberalism. And self-proclaimed “Marxists” believe they can be moderately Marxist by attacking Marxism.

powerful thought, or “musing” [Grübelei], is itself not a sufficient reason. Our present world is one in which all forms of fascist ideology strut about in broad daylight; a world where radio, newspapers, journals, and the like daily, endlessly, and so zealously embody nonsense and fraud that it surely scandalizes the ears of any philosopher who hears it. So, if anyone still believes that philosophers boldly promote “truth” here is evidence that such is simply not the case. Either consciously or unconsciously they all support fascist ideology, or at least that is their net effect. Such is clear once one sees that these philosophers view the antithesis of fascism—materialism—as the enemy. In short, these philosophers are bourgeois ideologues. I think that bourgeois philosophy is the essence of this bourgeois ideology, and today in Japan, the representative of bourgeois philosophy is clearly none other than Nishida philosophy. This is the main reason we must problematize Nishida philosophy.

i got a copy of the japanese ideology on a whim after reading this and wow
Of course, philologism, meaning a philological consciousness, does not necessarily have to become Japanism right away. Originally it cannot be understood as Japanism. It could become Hellenism or Hebraism, ancient Sinology (Confucianism) or ancient Indianism (Buddhism). Academic philosophers, Christian theologians, Imperial Way scholars, and Buddhist theologians all use these philological mechanisms to speak to contemporary things. But studying the classics is studying the classics—it is not the same thing as resolving current problems. Yet through this philologistical sleight of hand, ancient studies pretends it can solve actual present problems. And this union makes up the various forms of reactionary thought across the globe inevitably produced from within contemporary capitalism.
