You can log into any client using their OAuth flow, if you need to log into managing your account you can use /account on the PDS. But there’s no real use of logging into the PDS directly outside of these two reasons. So there’s no direct /login.

The target market right now is for brands. Though if you wanted to provision a PDS for yourself and friends that is possible through Protobase also. We have plans, once Protobase is launched and stable to create a sister project (pds.club) that’ll focus on tools for individuals and friend groups.

Good question, it entirely depends on the target audience of your project. If you’re creating a tool for atproto users, you probably don’t need to host a PDS. If you’re building an app that just so happens to be on atproto, but may be used by anyone. You might want a branded PDS.

@protobase.at question: when a pds is being sunset, how should we handle accounts? 1. just full send, delete all users, blobs and server 2. make pds to readonly, notify users to give migration grace period, then delete server 3. figure out way to migrate users to a public, open protobase hosted pds

this is the ideal, we’re actually working on making this happen. but the ecosystem hasn’t caught up to this because some apps just don’t want to host the infra needed for account creation while keeping control over their branding. soon though!

There’s no way to merge accounts in atproto as far as i’m aware. Each record has a canonical at-uri that includes the accounts DID. So it would require all services to be aware of the move from did:plc:a1 to did:plc:b2 Right now there is no broadcast of this so every service would have to build it

This is true, I have plans on how to fix this specifically that i’d love to tie into Protobase. This article by @renderg.host goes through the issue a bit further. I want to create a v1 of this “Atmosphere Front Door” that can integrate with Protobase PDSes and others in the future.

Also though, if a user does care they probably already know about AT Protocol or what a PDS is in the first place. The main idea of Protobase is to allow app devs to implement a native-feeling registration flow. Once a user finds out they can choose PDSes they could always migrate to another one.

I for one, on @offprint.app wouldn’t be allowing choice of PDS during sign up (aside from region maybe). I specifically want control over branding and onboarding. I am open to ideas though if you have any, I may also release an SDK for easily implementing registration flows in JS apps.

Umm, not sure. Some apps that dont mind letting their users join any PDS could give users a choice during account creation flows. Though I don’t think that’d be the audience of Protobase If you don’t mind in the first place you probably already have registration flows implemented with open PDSes

I suppose it does, the same way that most AT Protocol users are centralized on Bluesky mushroom PDSes, but doesn’t mean this shouldn’t exist in my opinion This is for those that want something easily managed and provisioned quickly without doing too much heavy lifting You could always self host

This is a goal, the first draft of the landing page mentioned no lock-in and exports. But I wouldn’t be offering that (in an automated way) initially at launch. Exports of blobs and databases will be available via support until the feature is automated. Rest assured there will be no lock-in.

Also provide ways to use captcha services on account creation. Not full proof, but will help keep things safer Plus we will only be counting *active* accounts towards your billing/limits. Deleted and banned accounts will be ignored Also you’ll only be charged for overages, based on your tier.

For now yes, app devs are the target audience. I don’t think there’s a huge market of end users that will want to host a pds for themselves/friends. At least right now. Though that’s where this idea was conceived from initially, so I’m ready for that too lol
