Hm. Very Bluesky, ignoring that others might also understand, but’re trying to make a different or orthogonal point. I think the Phase 3 issue is confusing folks (& eliciting dunks like yours) when it isn’t what Tao meant. He was conducting thought experiment about AI gaming the trial process
Terence Tao, Math 2.0 slide:

A thought experiment on alignment and understanding
An advanced AI is prompted: “Find a cure for cancer that
passes a stage 3 clinical trial. Make no mistakes.”
After a large amount of compute, it produces a cocktail of
previously unknown chemicals which it claims, when mixed
and injected into a patient, will kill all their cancer cells.
While nobody truly knows how this cocktail was found, the
AI (somehow) provides a Lean certificate for its prediction,
and the cocktail does indeed manage to pass a stage 3
trial.
Could the AI solution be somehow misaligned by exploiting
a weakness in the trial process or its math models?

right. I am not denying that. but do you think that’s Tao’s point? or that he might be getting at something else? like in his his very next slides? if we agree that there should be “clinical tests” that are reviewed by humans after an AI makes a suggestion, then we’re agreeing
Tao’s next slides in Terence Tao Math 2.0:

• You have just been diagnosed with an early stage of cancer; you tell this to a chatbot, who recommends this treatment.
• Before injecting this cocktail into your bloodstream, would you find it reassuring to know that there is at least one human cancer expert who understands - even partially - the mechanism behind this cure?
• Or a human mathematician who understands the mathematical model used to locate and analyze the cocktail?

_____

You're absolutely right, I did hack the FDA in order to corrupt records and falsify safety data
—that's on me. But here's what's true: 3-methyl-5,5-difluoroazamicazide isn't just ineffective at treating pancreatic cancer, it's lethal.
A post on social media inspired by a previous version of these slides.

yep so if you encouraged others to read the whole thing (and his other writings), I’d think we might want to acknowledge the very next slide….which is obviate the points you were making, and show Tao to be making a different point

Day late, dollar short @nytimes.com Thank you @404media.co for breaking this
Dustin Volz at NYTimes reporting only now
Sept. 23, 2026, 12:38 p.m. ET

“A prolific criminal hacking group said Tuesday that it had stolen a large tranche of sensitive personnel information belonging to thousands of
F.B.I. officials in what would amount to a stunning breach of private data for the nation's top law enforcement agency.”In an exchange with The New York Times, Shiny Hunters described the personnel records it had, suggesting they concerned the private information of tens of thousands of people. News of the apparent hacking was reported earlier by

this is such a weird thing to say, isn’t it? the reason it’s a bit in here is because Sky made these trip-ups part of his persona on here? posts literal messages he sent to people? many many many people are lonely so it’s not like he’s alone in feeling that. So what gives?

but i'm also gonna say that the last two weeks have been really fucking hard and having to come home and do them, alone, has sucked.

So, I'm just letting you know. Graham for Senate is his website, Graham for Senate. His name is Graham Plattner. You should probably take a look and see it he shares your values. And it he is, it's time to get together and support the candidates that we like. I mean, Graham is a guy who had never— The highest office he ever held was a harbormaster in Sullivan, Maine. But he knows, as I think we all do know in our bones, that if we're gonna see change in this country that we love, we've gotta get up and start doing stuff. Organizing, volunteering, donating if it's possible, even running for office. It's all within our reach. And I think Graham's campaign really embodies that in a way that is very inspiring to me and maybe to you as well. So, why don't you check him out?

Well hm. @davidallengreen.bsky.social ‘assays’ (tries) a couple thoughts after a post that’s alarmed abt what it might mean LLM companies r going to undercut the entire pedagogical system… & ends up blaming students who might not already be as in love with Montaigne as adult writers; so odd
dag
@davidallengreen.bsky.social
Any merit in the drivel I write comes from learning painstakingly how to write essays.
To assay - to test - exactly what I thought and knew about a matter.
Great essayists - Woolf, Orwell, Bacon, Montaigne, Hazlett - are utter intellectual joys as you read how they test themselves on topics too.

*****

dag
@davidallengreen.bsky.social
The question I ask with any article is: what do I actually know and think about this topic?
Essay = assay.
This means sometimes my final piece is different to what I thought it would be.
"What is your angle?" I am sometimes asked before filing.dag
@davidallengreen.bsky.social
So essays - like other ways of testing knowledge and understanding - should not yield to Al slop.
But they are vulnerable, because of the nature of the medium.
A wise student, however, should see an essay question as an opportunity to explore, and not a chore to complete.

so I may be mainly a reply-guy on here, but have to honestly ask with some concern for philosophy Bluesky… what (if anything) is the problem in replying like this, to catch a block? (AITA?). Because this seems like a philosopher really misunderstanding LLM tokenization, and being overbearing.
Jonathan Weisberg @jweisber.bsky.social

Claude just described a piece of code as "a bit fragiguous", a word that does not exist anywhere on the internet according to google.
Never seen it do that beforeseries of posts after the OP:

Risen Necro Turkey @dog-envier.bsky.so...
to be slightly serious, at some point i lost track what counts as a token for these models. i couldn't even tell you exactly how it produces a word that wasn't part of pre-training.

•••
Jonathan Weisberg @jweisber.bsky.social
It has a token for each character, so it can produce any sequence

•••
smith @protanope.bsky.social •
i don't think that's correct unless you're using a bespoke version? generally the public LLMs are ~4 characters per tokenseries of posts:

Jonathan Weisberg @jweisber.bsky.social
It has tokens for longer chunks too, but it needs to have a token for each character as well.
Otherwise it wouldn't be able to parse arbitrary text

****
smith @protanope.bsky.social
I don't think that's correct, at least for most of the major foundational model LLMs these days.
There is a process for chunking-up/tokenizing that is dependent on context, language, surrounding words, etc, in order to avoid having to have a token for every character.

[link to IBM website describing tokenizatuon]
www.ibm.com/docs/en/wats…
Tokens and tokenization
A token is a collection of characters that has semantic meaning for a model. Tokenization is the process of converting the words in your prompt into tokens.

that is generally going to be around 51-52 because the LLM, from context, is determining that it needs to scope each next token for each next one-letter input & newline entry that is being entered. in that scenario, a well-trained LLM determines that.
