i'm rearing my ugly head this side of severe burnout so let me introduce DEAD WATER DIRGE, the re-imagining of my ya historical fantasy that is now solidly ADULT GOTHIC HORROR with a hint of monsterfuckery. think nosferatu meets the shape of water set during the great stink 😈

an image of a white woman in an orange dress laid out on the shore with a river and a gloomy sky in the background. the text on top of the image reads: "Water devoured me as I slept. I drowned in deep, dark waves of a roiling sea. No matter how hard I swam toward the warped moon bobbing above me, I was dragged further and further into its depths. But, I wasn’t afraid. I had known terror since I’d returned to London, but in the womb of the water I was safe. A figure shrouded in shadows drifted by me, but as I turned to look it was gone. A flash of yellow, a pinprick of light in the unyielding black. Iridescent scales tickling the tips of my toes. Comfort. Joy. Home."

me realising that in my new adult fantasy set in a world of necromancers and the dead, obviously the royals shouldn't live in a palace. they should live in THE DEATH PYRAMID that was almost built in london in the victorian era instead of building more graveyards

something fun from SONGS FROM A DYING RIVER, my phantom of the opera inspired ya historical fantasy set in victorian london during the great stink that i'll be editing in the new year #wednesdaysnippet #writingcommunity

the background is a sepia-toned sea-scape with waves crashing against each other, in the foreground is white text reading: 'The space was illuminated by an astonishing amount of candles, somehow still burning through the haze and dripping water. Kyrie wrinkled her nose, not at the smell that still wafted unbidden from the pool of water behind her, but at the over-the-top gothic décor that screamed single, potentially mentally unsound bachelor.' also the title of the book beneath it: 'songs from a dying river'.

talking about sister burning, my querying novel, i thought i'd share my two wonderful commissions i've got for it. the first is the team: caractacus, senna, marcus and ria (by @/acedia), the second is from a scene where caractacus and senna share a moment before the final battle (by @/nikespera)✨

four characters stand under a full moon, the first is a tan-toned middle aged man with greying dark hair wearing a toga; the second is a young white girl with dark brown hair in a plait wearing a white undershirt, reddish-brown chest armour, a gold shoulder plate and trousers; the third is a white boy wearing silver armour with a blue tunic underneath; and the fourth is a white girl with red hair wearing a green tunic.

art of two characters hugging; one is a tan-toned man in his middle age with dark, greying hair wearing a set of roman armour and a red tunic, the other is a young white girl with brown hair in a plait wearing a white tunic. they are in a room with red patterned wallpaper and a window that shows the full moon outside.

it took me a while 'cause i had to get on my laptop but i'll put forward my own example of "i'm aspec but here's a very allo situation i'm in" 😂

Two characters from The Daughters of Boudicca are discussing the fact that one has taken his shirt off and got wet, while the other is embarrassed about it. In the narration, she compares looking at his naked body to looking at and admiring the form of a statue.

i've played around with this last line quite a bit and it's still not perfect, but there's some symmetry with both the title of chapter one (the wolves that sleep and the lambs that slaughter) AND the title of the other pov's first chapter (the wolves that slaughter and the lambs that sleep) 😊😌

The wolves of Rome are fast and wily, she sees their tricks. But, Senna knows, sometimes it’s wiser to be scared of the prey, not the predator.
She closes her eyes and curls in on herself, nestled in the arms of the earth.
This time, it’s the lambs turn to hunt.

what is writing if not a sad dad with no daughter and an angry girl with no father coming to learn they're perfect for each other? 😌

She turns over the figure, tears blurring her vision, and runs her thumb over the words scratched into the base. Crude, but firm enough that she can make out her own language in the wood.
For Senna. My daughter.

i love it!!!! 😊 making aesthetics is always so fun! here are some of mine for different projects i haven't shown on here before; an old aesthetic for daughters of boudicca (the book i'm revising), the bear hunt (an atalanta retelling) and the last giants of albion (another retelling i won't name 👀)

nine images in an aesthetic: the first is of a landscape of trees with fog in the distance; the second is a set of roman statues; the third is a shield with a gorgon head on it; the fourth is a girl in ancient dress with a leather waist strap and a knife in her hand; the fifth reads 'how do you destroy a monster without becoming one?'; the sixth is a girl in an ancient green dress clasping her hands together; the seventh is an old celtic carving; the eighth is a set of roman armour with a helmet and shield; the ninth is a set of roman columns.

nine images in an aesthetic: the first is a dark wood with a stream running through it; the second is a close-up of a girl's eye that's badly bruised; the third is an ancient axe nestled in some fur; the fourth is a girl holding a bow and arrow; the fifth reads 'i am terrified by his dark thing that sleeps in me'; the sixth is a man in old armour holding a sword; the sixth is a shirtless man facing away; the seventh is a bundle of brambles; the ninth is a group of people in armour holding their shields up to defend themselves.

nine images in an aesthetic: the first is a blue sea; the second is a dark forest with twisting roots; the third is a blue close-up of a man's face; the fourth is a man's hand reaching toward the sea; the fifth reads 'nobody is coming to save you. get up'; the sixth is a small rowing boat on the water; the seventh is a blue woman on a horse in armour; the eighth is a cave with misty water running through it; the ninth is a blue pair of hands under the water.
