Jurisdiction for punishment for witchcraft swung wildly through the 14, 15, and 1600s between ecclesiastical authority and state authority. Were you being punished for the different crimes of blasphemy or heresy? Or punished for the harm done to things, people, or animals? Are you hung or burned?

Previous to the late 15/early 1600s there were witch trials and books to read which taught various forms of 'natural magic' or how to punish those that practiced it. The most famous of which is the Malleus Maleficarum (The Hammer of Witches), written in 1486 by Catholic Monk Heinrich Kramer.

Only 4 months to Halloween so I'm back to researching The Salem Witch Trials for work and trying to inject some deeper context into it. Frequently said, "you can't use today's morals to judge the past," but that's lazy. There are contemporary writers who disagree with what's going on in their time.

On the 7th day they spot the good ship "Silly" in the distance. on the 8th day, a man is dunked thrice into the water off the ship for being drunk with stolen alcohol (strong waters). Then they saw two whales, one fighting a swordfish and a "flail fish", and behind that multiple water spouts.

It seems like a hassle to just leave England. In one paragraph, the ship is stopped at another English harbor and two of the ships trumpeteers are pressed into military service. Shortly thereafter, John eats his first fried flounder of his life and it blows his fuckin mind.

Today's historical reading: A Relation of Two Voyages to New England by John J Gent published 1676 about tourism he undertook in New England colonies in 1638. It is a page turner, every paragraph packed with an interesting detail of life's wonder and minutiae in the mid 1600s.
