The underwater meadows sustaining millions in extreme poverty | Project Seagrass
A new study reveals that seagrass acts as a critical safety net for millions of people living in extreme poverty across the Indo-Pacific.

The research highlights the importance of integrating seagrass ecosystems into poverty alleviation and sustainable development strategies in order to break this cycle.

The data makes visible a population of millions of people in poverty whose livelihoods intersect with a habitat that remains largely absent from poverty, development, and conservation agendas.

Project Seagrass @projectseagrass.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
As the first large-scale analysis of its kind, the research estimates that at least 18 million people living in poverty across the Indo-Pacific fish in seagrass meadows, including ~6.5m who are entirely dependent on the habitat for subsistence and fishing-related income.

Big win for Scotland’s nature! The Natural Environment Bill passed by MSPs will bring in legally binding targets to restore wildlife and habitats. Huge thanks to LINK’s members and supporters who helped make this happen! Let’s keep pushing for strong action and funding to restore Scotland’s nature.

Yet growing scientific evidence shows that marine biodiversity is fundamental to the health of people, animals, and the planet.

Project Seagrass @projectseagrass.bsky.social · 15/01/2026
By contrast, the benefits of the ocean are more commonly associated with fishing, exciting creatures such as whales and dolphins, or adventure watersports, rather than as a living system that directly supports human wellbeing.
110
Project Seagrass @projectseagrass.bsky.social · 15/01/2026
The wellbeing benefits of nature are often linked to forests or habitats that support diverse pollinators. Spending time in green spaces reduces stress and anxiety, for example.
