In our newsletter, @baratunde.com argues that agency is not productivity. AI enables us to do more. But that’s not agency. That’s capability. The AI companies want us to see one axis: capabilities. Move to the right and do more. But there’s another axis, power, and we are making no progress on it.

This.
AI represents a radical inversion of these properties. AI systems, especially large-scale, foundation and generative models, are centralized, opaque, capital-intensive, and asymmetric by design.

Most Americans don't feel in control of what social media companies collect about them. Now there's a tool to do something about it: The Applied Social Media Lab at Harvard University’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society is launching a new tool to help people reclaim control.

AI is betting big on the 2026 midterms Ads funded by the AI industry are starting to flood the 2026 midterm elections. Super PACs from two factions of the AI industry are pumping millions of dollars into 2026 primaries, backing and attacking candidates based on where they stand on AI regulation.

Individuals can exercise agency now. Here are a few solutions: 🧳Move between platforms. Explore tools that talk to each other. 🔍 Know your data. Download your data & understand what was collected. 🧠 Practice cognitive sovereignty. Use AI in ways that extend your thinking, not replace it.
