Age gates sound simple. Actually enforcing them without collecting IDs, misidentifying teenagers, or creating new privacy risks is anything but.

Maryland drew a clearer line: covered grocers and delivery services can’t use personal data to charge an individual shopper more, while the law preserves a range of personalized discounts. Other states have considered broader restrictions that can reach price reductions too.
100
Chamber of Progress @progresschamber.org · 23/09/2026
What can get caught up in broader restrictions? ✅ Personalized coupons ✅ Cart-abandonment discounts ✅ Loyalty rewards ✅ Win-back offers ✅ Subscription discounts Same technology, but a very different impact on shoppers depending on how the law is written.
100
Chamber of Progress @progresschamber.org · 23/09/2026
There are two very different ways states are approaching this: 1️⃣ Target personalized markups 2️⃣ Restrict personalized price changes in either direction The second approach can catch discounts along with higher prices.
100
Chamber of Progress @progresschamber.org · 23/09/2026
“Surveillance pricing” sounds simple: stop companies from using your data to charge you more. But some state proposals go much further, restricting personalized discounts too. That difference could determine whether shoppers keep some of the deals they use every day.

The piece also looks at another early test: autonomous vehicles. The bigger question for D.C.’s next mayor is whether an affordability agenda can pair progressive goals with the housing, transportation, and investment needed to make the city less expensive.
100
Chamber of Progress @progresschamber.org · 22/09/2026
Housing may be the biggest test. Lewis George has pledged to build 72,000 homes in five years, with zoning reform, faster permitting, and more housing near transit. At the same time, she’s pushing stronger rent stabilization and tenant protections.

The Senate failed to advance the Clarity Act today, leaving the U.S. without clear rules for digital assets after years of bipartisan negotiations. The bill would have strengthened consumer protections, cracked down on bad actors, and given businesses clearer rules.

AI Copyright Claims Are a First Amendment Problem
The remedies sought in AI copyright litigation would work as prior restraints, filtering speech before it exists and leaving fair use with no day in court.

Chamber of Progress @progresschamber.org · 08/09/2026
A filter can’t always tell the difference between infringement and someone using Barbie or Disney to make a point, write a parody, or study American culture. If the filter blocks it first, fair use never even gets a chance.
