The fact is that we had a significant expansion of provision, it is better to consolidate than operate in many places at sub-scale which is poor for students and for research. And no ... decent REF scores for small units in a different financial context is not evidence. True for many subjects.

profserious @profserious.bsky.social · 01/08/2026
I think the argument here is an economic one. You need scale to operate. It does work similarly in other disciplines but generally A&H is more fragmented and fragile, hence vulnerable. You also need scale to get disciplinary range and operate s suitably sized PG programme.

Yes. Interestingly I think that it is one of the areas where the gap between the education offerings and the research frontier is largest. This is one of the ways maths has adapted.

profserious @profserious.bsky.social · 31/07/2026
Looking at cost is incomplete you need to look at overall contribution (margin) and capacity to recover research time. Again my aim here is to look at how we can sustain the Arts & Humanities.

profserious @profserious.bsky.social · 31/07/2026
I do think that there is a critical size because of the practicalities of education - which funds this! Research metrics obviously tell you nothing about sustainability.
120
profserious @profserious.bsky.social · 31/07/2026
To be fair, I have argued that other areas (indeed the entire academic enterprise) need to innovate too! I am simply concerned with A&H because it is where the pressures are most immediate.

Just thought data of interest. No agenda. I think graduate salary is a very poor basis for league table (but possibly for MBAs?). Graduate-level jobs (the most used metric) quite good but needs refining. I like the tables showing entry against outcome. Shows some places (incl our own) do very well.
